I seriously need help

I bought Fallout 3 GOTY for $5 on Steam because of the Summer Sale, knowing that the mod community was huge and that it would be fun to play around with some of the popular mods out there.

I didn't know that it was completely impossible for me to get them though.

"To get this mod working, you need this. Oh, and this. Here's a vague description of how to properly install them. Also change the coding of this non-existent file so it works better."

I am so frustrated at this point I'm about to burst into tears. Even the guides I read on how to in stall them just contradict what other guides I've read!

I seriously need help. I got the Mod Manager working, but the directions of how to download the Script Extender don't tell me what to do, and downloading the Wander's Edition mod makes no sense (like bringing it to the mod manager as a package).

Could anyone assist a mod noob with this?

It is real easy, one you know how. It literally is a drag and drop system.

I'm assuming you are using windows.

My computer/C drive (or wherever steam is located)/program files (or program files x86 if you have a 64 bit OS)/Steam/steamapps/common/fallout new vegas/Data

Open your zip/rar files, and open the data folder in the zipped, and drop the contents into the data file.

The modmanager is just a way to organize everything, because the vanilla way is to start up the game, and selecting 'data files'. that method is haphazard, so the community made it better.

I feel your pain. When I tried downloading my first mods and getting them to work I was damn frustrated too. But don't worry, you'll get the hang of it. ;)

You mentioned you already had the mod manager working, so far so good. As for FOSE, it's as simple as extracting the downloaded archive into your installation folder. Not your data folder, this is where actual mods go. FOSE needs to be in the same folder as the main executable. Now you should be able to run the game by launching fose_loader.exe, and this is what you should use to launch the game from now on.

Fallout Wanderers Edition comes in something called a FOMOD package. This is a file that can be opened by FOMM by double clicking it or manually by locating it through the package manager in FOMM. From here the package can be activated or deactivated whenever you want. Activating it will usually in the case of advanced mods such as FWE open a window that allows you to choose some options on what features to install. From here, the installation process is automated, saving you from manually putting the files where they need to go. Not all mods come in FOMOD packages though, but whenever you have the option, chose it, as it makes things a bit easier to handle.

In the case of FWE there are at the moment two packages that needs to be installed in the right order, as well as a hotfix that you will have to manually place in your data folder and overwrite existing files.

There are lots and lots of other things that are important like your load order, compatibility fixes etc., and it is too extensive for me to go into detail here. For now, just focus on trying to get a few mods to work, and when you feel more secure you can move on to something more advanced.

I've also seen a series of videos on the front page of the Fallout 3 Nexus recently on modding for beginners. I haven't watched them myself, but they might be worth checking out. :)
