overlapping settlement boundaries

As far as I know, BAD THINGS.

The author of the popular mod All sets Extended kept the Sanctuary and Red Rocket boundaries about 30'-50' away from each other - thats as close as I've ever seen two settlements. Also, if you read some of the commentary in the Conquest and C.A.M.P. mods, the game simply doesn't allow you to place a settlement too close to another. To me, that sounds like you would crash the game if you tried it.

Looking at the map, there should be some way you can pull them a bit apart. There is some space there (about as much as ASE does between Sanc. and RR). HOWEVER, several popular mods touch those two places - Outcasts and Remnants and Wild Wasteland are just two I can think of off-hand - so be aware that it could cause conflicts.

Actually overlapping shouldn't even be possible. The cells your building area boxes are in MUST have the the proper Location and Encounter Zone set up, otherwise you made a dead zone. Potentially with everything respawning/resetting, too.

Due to this, a cell can belong to one settlement at most.

Press "b" in the CK or use "tb" in the console in-game to see the cell borders. It's those yellow-ish lines.

I was looking at 2 already published mods for those areas (roadside pines and natick banks) when I looked at the preview pics and noticed that the boundaries might cross. I installed natick and sure enough it crosses into the roadside pines area by quite a bit. The two areas are close enough that if I install one or the other settlement mod that I will forever be going back to fight respawns from the unmodded site so I guess my only option is to create my own settlements or make one large merged settlement.
