Can't seem to keep going

I've looked at SkyRe, I wonder just how modular it is? Because there are things that put me off, like the bow blur already mentioned and the fact that the author decided for whatever reason to nerf Bretons (my main toon is a Breton Female.)

I think I figured out what Skyrim might be missing...options.

This about it, at Skyrim's core is the main quest and the civil war. You are a random guy dropped in a cart to be executed, then suddenly thrust into picking a side in the war (though that can change later until you actually commit) and now suddenly you are dragonborn? What if my character doesn't give a crap about the civil war or being dragonborn? What if I'm more interested in working my way up as a ruler, or an evil madman, or something else? Sure, ok, there's the "guilds" but even each of them want you to be the freaking leader after they basically JUST MET YOU. Why can't I just be the really good thief, assassin, mage, or warrior and take contracts as I see fit instead of having to be the head guy?

Blame the console cretins. If you look at Hollywood movies, they're written for the lowest common denominator. They can't be about "just some guy," they have to be about the greatest, strongest, most frabjous, cigar-smoking tough guy on Earth. US Presidents fly up in fighter jets and battle alien invasions. Billionaires spend their time kung fuing ninja assassins rather than, say, making money or sailing yachts. It's infantile wish-fulfilment for unimaginative drones who spend their actionless and meaningless lives grubbing for a mortgage and the material goods Madison Avenue tells them they need. Bethesda has welcomed the slobbering console neanderthals with open arms, so they've spent 200 million dollars to produce the video game equivalent of a blockbuster summer movie, all empty sturm und drang and "AMERICA FSCK YEAH" a'splosions with the subtlety of a sledgehammer to the balls. We should probably be thankful that the creative team was able to sneak what little subtlety there is into the game by flying under the radar of the corporate mandarins and beancounters.

Gee, Pharmakos, quit beating around the bush and tell us what you really think. ;)

I've been a game player a long time and when I think about games there are a few that hold permanent places in my memory for whatever reasons, games like Zork, Ultima 7, and a couple 3X space games. Those games were made by people who actually enjoyed games and understood why people played them. I guess Pharmakos is right; games are made, or controlled, today by people who only understand profit. The games are really no different than today's movies; all special effects and no story. Eye candy over content. I especially remember Zork. It was a text game. No graphics. No animations. No sound. Nothing but text. I was completely enthralled by that game because it took place within my own mind. It was like an interactive book or story. The authors pulled you along into their world and YOU constructed it as you moved along. I'm sure the GUE looked different to everyone who played that game.

It doesn't take a lot to make a good game, but it does take content. Its too bad that current game priorities have moved from content to HD graphics, frame rates, animated voice overs, and all the other "cool" things. It takes a lot of money to write and maintain a modern game engine. It seems there is little money left for the game itself. Its why modders make the best stuff; they are game players, not bureaucrats. Ah, didn't mean to rant but games are my favorite entertainment media. Just hate to see where they're heading.

Regarding the post somewhere before about a Rincewind-like character; I agree that you really have to roleplay to get the most out of it. I also don't recommend the heavy warrior stereotype, (they seem to be too easy after a while). I love playing stealthily, and that's the way I've played so far.I have to sneak, shoot an arrow, run away if it's a boss. My heart jumps when the boss gets closer and closer, silently praying that he/she/it will turn the other way before they reach my shadowy corner. It is actually extremely immersive in that manner.

As a result, I can barely tank a few hits from a bandit. I wouldn't say it requires strategy, but it does require some patience, a few casts of detect life and so on. If I were in Skyrim, I wouldn't go up to a bandit and shoot an arrow at point-blank. So I guess, (repeating again), just play as what you would really like to be.

As for text-based games, they are much, much better in terms of content, because all it takes to create a new room, a new quest, or item is lots of imagination, a little sprinkle of programming and good grammar. Speaking of which, the Discworld MUD is quite good. Discworld! Now in a online multiplayer game. Although I recently stopped playing because it was too addictive and time-consuming. Most likely people who are bookworms like me will like it. Others who are used to graphics and all won't have the patience.

I considered Skyre, but I'm not sure I'm ready for an overhaul for Skyrim yet. I haven't even finished the main quest. Not only that, watching a few videos on Youtube about Skyre shows me a few things I don't think I'd like, for example the blurry vision with bows. I love my sneaky bow characters, and that would piss me off to no end. I know a perk gets rid of it, but still...I dabble with Archery in real life, and that blurry vision never happens...at all with any thing unless I'm about to pass out.

I got up to the second last part of the main quest before I rerolled a couple of times, I still haven't completed the main quest I don't even regret rerolling either to play with SkyRe. I don't know anything about this blurry vision with bows, I never got that. O.o Bows with SkyRe feels more unwieldy at the start but with perks and skillups you get better. It took a little time to get used to but ultimately I liked it better overall. The game feels so fresh and amazing!

I do it too, but my problem is I'm thinking of doing a different type of character and wondering how it would go, so I abandon my current game to go make that character and play it out. Then I finish a guild questline and start over again with a new idea.

So far, I have done...

Combat mage with destruction/alteration maxed out

Conjuration mage with two dremora lords to kill everything

Necromancer that can kill you, then draft you into her undead army

Master illusionist who casts Mayhem and then disappears during the chaos (this one was really fun)

Sword & board warrior that simply cannot be hurt (except by magic)

Dual-wielding warrior that kills basically everything in one or two power attacks

Two-handed warrior swinging a great big battle axe

Archer that can kill 10 enemies before having to pull out a sword

I rarely get above level 30 because I get bored and want to go try something new. About the only thing I haven't done yet is full-on sneak/thief/assassin, and I just rolled a Khajit the other day to try that out.

This is me, except I seldom get past lvl 20-24

It also doesn't help that I gradually add more and more mods, eventually causing too much instability and thus forcing me to reroll with less mods .
