Yay! fixed my CTD's

Well, I think I FINALY fixed my CTD's.

It was graphics memory all this time. I had a 896meg video card, yet it was not enough!

Heres my following Vram usages on startup of FONV, In order of install. Typicaly memory usage would raise another 100~300megs in gameplay depending on area.

NMC small: 500megs!!!

NMC small + PocoBueno: 750megs

PocoBueno + NMC small: 600megs

NMC Med: 800megs (Lots of CTD's when it hit 896megs)

And using NMC large maxed it out totaly. After getting a new video card I found NMC large used about 1.5gigs!!

NMC Large + Bueno UHQ everything = 1700megs peak memory usage during a quick play session. I could see it passing 2000megs in mod added areas or just complex vanilla areas.

Also, Windows Aero would add another 100~200megs of video ram usage, according to GPU-Z

But now I have a 3gb video card. BRING IT ON!

Anyway, Point of this post being:

Don't use more then one of the smallest texture packs if you have less then 1gig of video memory. I can't even recommend using a texture pack on 512megs, and even with 1gig you are better off installing NMC over poco then poco over NMC.

NMC med = For 1.5gig cards and NMC large = 2gig+ cards.

A well-designed app won't crash when it runs out of video memory--that's just pathetic. That's why system memory and virtual memory exist. Duh.

We all knew from the start that the Gamebryo engine was not well-designed. You'd be surprised by how many people would suddenly stop having problems with the game if they would just quit trying to choke their hardware.

System memory can not be used as video memory, You wouldn't want to be used either, unless you like 0.5fps

Apparently, bethsofts engine CAN run while out of video memory, its just *something* crashes it pertty quickly.

As for why? You try writing a multi million line engine and see if you can make it do something useful when it runs out of video memory. Checking every single allocation and having it do something useful on failure that does not result in invalid states...

luthienanarion: recent expairments suggest the gamebryo engine can be pushed MUCH further, But texture memory limits are very hard set. a video card with 3gb of video ram can push FONV extreamly hard. One with 1gig of ram can not.

Absolutely true, but not that many people have video cards with more than 1GB of vram. They still try to push gigantic textures through it and then ask the troubleshooting forum why their game crashes, however.

I´m glad I found this thread, since I experienced constant crashing. I had a feeling it might be an issue with NMC.

I´ll download the medium version now and then the small if that doesn´t help... I hope either one will fix my crashing, too

But I do have a question to those defending the engine: How can it be that I can, say, load a game where I´m out in the wastes, then enter some small room and have the game crash? Shouldn´t the engine clean up the memory instead of crashing?!

hm that looks like as another CTD as the "ramoverflow".

u have many crashed at loading screen and if u enter small rooms? than try the section "Fixes for crashing" in this link http://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/Fallout_NV_Troubleshooting_guide

if u have decoder codec installed like ffdshow then try section "Fixes for audio issues", other similar codecs can crash to..

aand turn of anti virus for fonv

btw i using nmc small currently ..no crash cyber.. if i have time than i will try the medium and blast my 1gb vram ;)

If you have a more recent version of ffdshow, it should have New Vegas excluded by default.
