WarRatsG
You could try a trilogy by Phillip Pullman called His Dark Materials, the books being called The Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. A movie called The Golden Compass claimed to be based on the series, but rest assured: the movie is nothing like the books. It's barely even close. I guess it's not much like Game of Thrones, but there is a lot of depth to it. So long as you don't mind the volume of antitheism (anti-religiousness) involved, you will probably like it - it's great for essays of all levels too. mellowtraumatic
One of my favorite series is the Avalon Series by Marion Zimmer Bradley. The first book is a retake on the legend of King Arthur, told from the perspective of the women in his life, like his mother, sister, and wife. Very good. http://www.amazon.com/gp/interests/bookseries/avalon/ref=sr_1_6_acs_b_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1351421274&sr=8-6-acs
