Please, Help me...LOAD ORDER

Recommended Posts

Couple of things. Doesn't sound like a Load Order issue. Download and install BOSS (http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/20516) for load order changes.

First thing to try is, try deleting (back it up to a separate directory) the .INI file in the Games directory (usually C:\"Your Username"\My Games\Oblivion) and restart the game from the Launcher (not OBSE or other start file).

A new .INI will be created. If the game doesn't start, then it may be a mod conflict.

For future reference, uninstalling Oblivion solves nothing, unless your problem was textures/meshes that have been overwritten--and in that case, I'm assuming you would have done a backup before installing a texture/mesh replacer, correct? A utility like Wrye Bash can help you when it comes to locating at least a few problems with load order, and it be easily used to temporarily uncheck some mods and help narrow down the culprit.

yeah thanks to whomever told me to move oblivion ini, now I cant put it back. It says to 'replace it' but I have actually tried and failed.

what now? 'ugh --**** * ** **** **** **** ** ****"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'

The game will regenerate oblivion.ini for you if it's deleted. If you're getting CTDs, the best bet is to uninstall mods a couple at a time until the CTDs stop.

All BOSS does is change a text file that determines you load order. If you're not happy with the way that BOSS has arranged certain items, you can use another mod manager to change the load order. The vast majority of the time, BOSS gets the load order right.

BOSS is not perfect. But it is the best thing we have for setting load order. The instructions for BOSS say you may have to set some mods after running BOSS. Then there is a function to keep those you do change in the order you chose instead of where BOSS wants to put them.

Also, ther is a function in OBMM that lists all mods that were installed in their load order for each save IF you were running OBMM when you made that save.

It sounds like you may have deleted the Oblivion_Default.ini - which is NEEDED to regenerate the Oblivion.ini. The default runs once the first time you start the game and it's purpose is to generate the other Oblivion.ini, which is loaded every time the game starts. If The game cannot find the Oblivion.ini in the proper place, it then runs the Oblivion_Default.ini to create it again. To do this, start the game from the original Oblivion launcher and not from OBMM or any other program that has it's own launcher.

The one that should be deleted is in the \users\yourusername\My documents\my games\Oblivion - which is the one that is auto generated on starting the game. When you get it back, be sure to make a backup copy.

If you have a backup copy - COPY it, do not use move to put it back into the proper folder. That way you keep the backup safe.

To get that Oblivion_default.ini back you will have to reinstall the game

If you do not delete anything before reinstalling, the reinstall will not touch your mods. If you are worried about losing anything, Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the WIKI section of the Nexus

http://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/Oblivion_reinstall_procedure

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.

No you don't. :) But getting this kind of thing right can be a hassle for people unfamiliar with it. We all were in your boat, at one time.

If you run Wrye Bash and BOSS places mods after WB's Bashed Patch, it means BOSS doesn't know those mods. It hasn't received any reports on their placement. I'd suggest looking in the long descriptions for each of these mods here on Nexus for ideas where they should go. And frankly, some mods are just incompatible with others. Better Cities, which caused you these problems, has a line clearly stating in its description that it would be wise to check the official thread for incompatibilities. Anything that complex is going to change a lot of things, and it's a good idea to take the developer's advice.

Best of luck.
