Exactly.

 

If your goal is a career in the 3d industry, pick based on what is used where you're trying to get a job. Probably Maya for film work, and 3dsmax for game stuff.

 

If you're doing it for a mod/similar project, you have to look at format compatability first.

 

If you're just doing it for fun, look at the features and what you are most comfortable with.

 

 

The basic point here is that all of the top programs are capable of producing similar results. Unless you're forced by job/format reasons to use a specific program, it doesn't matter which one you pick. Look at the demos and pick the one you work with best.

A lot of times you really don't have any choice when it comes to education. All of the colleges I visited are heavily into Maya (ick!). And me being a max user, I feel out of place. But I understand what it will still be a crucial skill when entering the industry.

 

Before I dive into an associates/bachelor degree (I'll be using maya throughout), I'm planning to go to another college for a year and learn SoftImage.

 

Things may change however, since I still have yet to fly to the UK and visit that college.
