The End of the World?

IIRC, there is a 1 in 23,000,000,000 chance of something going wrong. I think considering those odds, it's worth to take the risk. Also, any black holes that could be created woud be microscopic and incredibly unstable. They would evaporate in under a second.

Really though, I don't want to die yet, but I think if I had to die now dying in a black hole would be a pretty sweet way of doing it. If somehow something did go wrong and it did create a large black hole, we wouldn't even have a chance to feel pain.

Actually, that is a common misconception. There is no such thing as "A large Black Hole" (except maybe the inactive ones at the center of all galaxies). An active Black Hole only needs to be the size of a pin-head. It weighs more than everything in the (known) Universe combined. Also, if a Black-Hole was highly unstable, it wouldn't simply "evaporate." There would not be enough inside pressure to "hold it together." It would then colapse in on itself. This, in turn, could essentially "implode" the entire known Universe.

Although I do have to admit, dying in a Black-Hole WOULD be pretty cool.

Another theory I read, is that a Black-Hole would be created, and the Earth would be sucked into it, traveling aproximately a distance of 4 light-years before "transitioning" back into "normal space." However, in these "Wormholes," light and time have no meaning or boundaries. We could travel these 4 light-years in the blink of an eye. Heck, we could even go back or forward in time!

Site 1

Taken from site 1,

"Back in the 1970's, Stephen Hawking came up with theoretical arguments showing that black holes are not really entirely black: due to quantum-mechanical effects, they emit radiation. The energy that produces the radiation comes from the mass of the black hole. Consequently, the black hole gradually shrinks. It turns out that the rate of radiation increases as the mass decreases, so the black hole continues to radiate more and more intensely and to shrink more and more rapidly until it presumably vanishes entirely"

Site 2

Taken from site 2,

"It will be extremely exciting if the LHC did produce black holes," CERN theoretical physicist John Ellis said. "OK, so some people are going to say, 'Black holes? Those big things eating up stars?' No. These are microscopic, tiny little black holes. And they’re extremely unstable. They would disappear almost as soon as they were produced."

Wormholes are only theorizd. We haven't found any evidence of them, or at least as far as i know, haha.

Oh my GOD someone IS inventing my Black-Hole-In-A-Can!!!!

Anyone remember the inventions topic I started during the Spring? One of my ideas was a black hole you can spawn anywhere, anytime if you feel suicidal but that the world doesn't deserve to live on without you....

There would nto be enough energy to sustain any black hole made by this supercollieder....it would zap out of existence immediately...but maybe...thinking of quantum physics..it would show up as a superdooper in anohter universe and kill everything?

I remember first reading about this years ago and getting agitated. Now with the likelihood of us not travelling to other galaxies in my lifetime, I prefer to get excited about any new major science that could eventually be a means to that end.

This could also be a good theory for what started the great catastrophe in Palladiums "Rifts" game.

Yes, I thought of this as well. It would indeed be great if Humanity invented medical cures or interstellar travel from this...

Well, I just found out that they did the experiment. We're all still here I guess... Although, I'm not sure if they shot the protons at eachother yet...

Yeah they started about 4 this morning. The lack of catastrophic, planet-shattering, orbit-altering devastation is disappointing. Maybe later. Did anyone else notice this was not in the news at all? To be such a major break in science, it seems someone would at least have mentioned it.

EDIT: MSNBC just did a quick interview but I missed the beginning. All I caught was that they have not really done anything yet.

i swear its just a joke but really it could cause a another planet to merge it is possible

McKay

well McKay is making himself well with his ego (Sheppard)

yeah like we never seen McKay without using his ego(!) ( Ronan)

... (McKay)
