What laptop do you recommend?

Recommended Posts

Hi there and thanks for reading :)

First i must say that i need a laptop (because i move sometimes, and i actually prefer it) and about the size, the perfect would be 15", because 17" is a bit BIG and heavy and less than 14" is, you know, less than 14"...

So i've searched for gaming laptops between 1000 euros and 1400 euros, thats what i can afford. Ah and i'm spanish :)

And this are my actual poor specs: (it's a VAIO i got a few years ago)

Core 2 Duo p8400 @ 2,26Ghz with 3mb cache

ATI HD 3400 with 256MB vram

2gb ram @ 1333 mhz

232 gb hard drive @ 5400rpm

16,4", 1600x900

3 usb 3.0

weights like 3kg

Now what i've found:

I was told that the best gaming laptops are alienware and asus, so i look for them:

In spanish alienware u can only get m14 or m17, i configured both:

Alienware m14x (r2) configured

--------------------------------------------

i7 3610QM @ 2,3>3,3 Ghz (turboboost), 6mb cache

GeForce GT 650M GDDR5 with 2gb vram

8gb Ram DDR3 @ 1600MHz

500 GB @ 7200 rpm (i'd like a ssd, but the only one i could afford was 128gb what is not enough, i have mine almost full...)

WLED hi-def True life , 14", 1600x900 (there is a 1366 x 768, but this one cost only 60 more)

SuperMulti DVD+-R/RW

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits

Audio Creative Sound,THX TruStudio Pro,2.1 + subwofer (2 outputs)

battery 8 cells 63 W/h

1 usb 2.0 & 2 usb 3.0

rest of connectors, (rj-45, hdmi...)

weights 3kg more or less

Cost: 1329 euros + 30 more or less of transport

The "bad" thing is the size, i don't know if it will be too smal... i'm not sure, i now have a 16,4" with the same resolution.

Alienware m17x (r4) configured

---------------------------------------------

i7 3610QM @ 2,3>3,3 Ghz (turboboost), 6mb cache

GeForce GTX 660M GDDR5 with 2gb vram

8gb Ram DDR3 @ 1600MHz

500 GB @ 7200 rpm

Wide FHD-WLED LCD, 17,3", 1920 x 1080

SuperMulti DVD+-R/RW

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits

Audio Creative Sound,THX TruStudio Pro,2.1 + subwofer (2 outputs)

battery 9 cells 90 W/h

1 usb 2.0 & 4 usb 3.0

rest of connectors

weigthts more than 4kg

cost: 1.639 + 30 more or less of transport (too much...)

HP Pavilion dv7

----------------------

i7 3610QM @ 2,3>3,3 Ghz (turboboost), 6mb cache (same as both alienware)

GeForce GT 630M GDDR5 with 2gb vram

8GB ram DDR3 (couldn't find it's speed, but i'm quite sure it's 1333)

750GB hard drive @ 5400rpm

LED HP BrighView HD, 17,3", 1600x900 (it's as big as the m17 but with the resolution of the m14...)

SuperMulti DVD+-R/RW

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits

Audio Beats, Triple Bass Reflex, Subwoofer (2 outputs)

1 usb 2.0 & 3 usb 3.0

doesn't have rj-45 but i use wifi (only sometimes i plug it to get higher speed)

battery of 6 cells

don't know the weight

cost 999 euros, no transport needed.

Asus G55VW

---------------------

i7 3610QM @ 2,3>3,3 Ghz (turboboost), 6mb cache

GeForce GTX 660M GDDR5 with 2gb vram (same as m1)

12GB!! ddr3 @ 1600

750GB hard drive @ 7200rpm

Full HD antiglare, 15,6", 1920x1080

DVD+-R/RW, CD-RW

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits

EAX Advanced HD 5.0, THX TruStudio

4 usb 3.0

all needed connectors

8 cells

weights 4 kg

Cost: I could find where to buy it online (so i can configure it) in spain but here: http://www.hidevolution.com/asus-g55vw-ds71-i7-2gb-nvidia-gtx-660m-15-6.html they send it to the whole world, but:

1,286.75 + transport of 118.63 (and it may get damaged in a long travel hahahaha) Also i won't have a spanish keyboard, and i want my "Ñ" :( and the garanty...

So what do you recommend, one of this (wich) or any other that has similar or better specs?

Thanks in advance & hope i haven't mistyped anything...

of the ones you posted, the Asus G55 seems the be the best. they all have the same CPU it seems. and the Asus has the bettwr GPU. and more RAM (which unless you use a lot of VMs then you wont even notice a difference between 12gb and 8gb) and it has a 750gb HDD as opposed to a 500gb HDD. but if you are on a 232gb HDD and have managed with that, then the difference between a 500gb HDD and a 750gb HDD may mean nothing to you as you might never full up that much. plus its cheaper then the competitive Alienware its marked up against in your list. comparing it to the HP laptop, well the only thing the HP has going for it is the price. its a chunk cheaper, but the reason is, is cause its worse. worse GPU, slower HDD, worse resolution screen.

so yea, the Asus is the best in your list. all just depends if you are able to spend that much, and if you can find one in Spanish.

Yeah, but with the expensive transport the asus would cost 1405, the alienware m14 is 1359 with transport. If only asus sell it in the online shop... (just like alienware that lets u configure and buy) that would be great.

Then the hp has slower parts (ram @ 1333 and h.drive @ 5400) but it's cheaper, anway as i can afford the other i'll get alienware m14 or asus.

Asus is better but more expensive with transport..

Thanks for your opinion, i'll to find where to buy it in spain so i have a spanish keyboard :)

Asus is the best out of all three of those brands, ive only ever used asus boards gpus and monitors, and right now im using a G73 from them. all of there products run great, however alienware i know has a shoddy track record, a friend of mine bought the M17x and had it crap out on him a month and a half later. if you talking about something $1k+ that you would use for at least 2 years an extra $45 doesn't make much of a difference

@ hoofhearted4: haha ok, the m17 is quite expensive also... but the ones i've configured (m14 and m17) are almost the same, except screen size...

So the asus is better, thanks. But the bad thing is the language, US keyboard, and US windows unless u take ultimate, wich cost a lot... does anyone know a spanish website that lets u configure and buy that computer?

thanks to those who replied  (kudos to you)

btw i've searched in every corner of google and can't find a spanish g55 with the config i want at the desired price... so the second option is the alienware m14 (the m17 is big and expensive)...
