This a good build?

Recommended Posts

I did a bit of research and this is what I came up with.

CPU ($130) AMD FX-4170 Zambezi 4.2GHz (4.3GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W Quad-Core Desktop Processor FD4170FRGUBOX

RAM ($43) Patriot Signature 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model PSD38G13332H

Harddrive ($70) TOSHIBA DT01ACA050 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

GPU ($200) SAPPHIRE 11188-22-20G Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card (OC Edition)

Monitor ($205) Asus VE248H Black 24" 2ms Full HD HDMI LED Backlight LCD Monitor w/Speakers 250 cd/m2 10,000,000:1

PSU ($135) CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX850 V2 850W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80

Motherboard ($120) ASRock 990FX Extreme3 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Disk drive ($20) ASUS 24X DVD Burner

Case ($50) Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case (three preinstalled fans)

OS ($100) Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM

Total $1073.

(Sans the keyboard and mouse, have those).

Prices from newegg.

I'm looking to play games such as Skyrim heavily modded (higher resolution retextures, smoother meshes, etc.) and retaining a high level (~50+) fps.

Will this be enough? Is everything compatible? Should I invest in two video cards?

Good setup :D

I'd suggest getting 1600MHz RAM. Not much more expensive than 1333 and well...it's faster :P

The graphics card will be sufficient. Someone might suggest something else, but I think it'll be fine. ATI's drivers have been rather crappy lately though. Pretty sad when I had to downgrade to the 12.1 preview drivers because anything beyond those caused problems in nearly all my games. Hopefully, the 12.7 drivers will solve some issues, but I doubt it.

But yeah, everything will work together just fine.

I would not reccomend the 6950, the new 7000 series are faster and draw a lot less power.

Look for a 7870

There are better options for the processor to, the core i3's or the old phenom II's are faster.

Get an 2500k or 3570k instead of the AMD FX-4170, it's about 100 more. If price is an issue then i'd go for an phenom II 965, or a 945 and oc to 3.4 or 3.5

It's a good deal- but perhaps this is a better monitor for the money? It seems absolutely identical to yours, but a bit less expensive. Maybe it's the exact same one, but on sale now?

CPU ($130) AMD FX-4170 Zambezi 4.2GHz (4.3GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W Quad-Core Desktop Processor FD4170FRGUBOX

Replace with Athlon II 631, 641 or 651K and a FM1 motherboard. Faster, cheaper.

PSU ($135) CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX850 V2 850W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80

Use TX650V2 instead.

GPU ($200) SAPPHIRE 11188-22-20G Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card (OC Edition)

Use the money saved above to buy a 7950 instead.
