1: make f4se_loader.exe the default launcher? It's shown on the Dashboard but those buttons don't actually do anything.

 

1a: run FO4Edit from Vortex? It's shown on the Dashboard but those buttons don't actually do anything.

 

2: make my merge patch ALLWAYS come last?

 

3: Is there some other way to do load order than the useless LOOT?

For items 1, 1a, and 2 read the appropriate articles in the Vortex Knowledge Base. You also have the option to watch some tutorial videos.

 

For item 3, if you don't like LOOT, then don't use Vortex. Vortex has an integrated LOOT. If you try to construct your load order in spite of the built-in LOOT, then you will experience nothing but frustration and curse the day that Vortex was born. (I'm not exaggerating. Look through these Vortex forums and you'll see rants aplenty from people who thought they could turn Vortex into something that it isn't.)

 

On a brighter note, in my twelve years of modding games, Vortex with integrated LOOT handles load order issues better than any mod manager I've ever used.
