Moraelin
Also, just for the record, Bretons have one of the best racial bonuses in the game. Dragon breaths count as magic. Bretons have an all time 25% magic resistance, and can get a 50% magic absorb once a day, which stacks (albeit multiplicatively.) Add the Atronach Stone, and once a day you can be almost immune to magic and any dragon breaths. So, you know, there may be a reasonable reason why people play pretty Bretons. DoctorKaizeld
I prefer Nord as when you become a vamp you become immune to ice based attacks which are quite common in Skyrim
Moraelin
I will admit that that IS very convenient, plus Nords are probably the easiest race to get a pretty character. Still, I personally prefer to have some protection across the whole spectrum, than be immune to ice and boned against fire. More importantly, though, among the several LPs I've watched (not all to the end, mind you), the last three have all been Breton, none were Argonian, and only one ever was a high elf. I seem to remember ONE Argonian character showing up in a "Skyrim Let's Play" search once on YouTube, but I haven't watched that one. And even as search results go, it was as small a minority as it gets. Probably not a statistically significant sample, mind you, but still... I'm not sure where the OP gets the idea that "Thalmor" and Argonians are the most popular.
DoctorKaizeld
I know for power gaming Breton is the best for magic and is often played because of that as you can buff yourself into literal invincibility and win any fight you get in. I prefer nords as they are easy to build and as stated immunity to frost is great. Frost dragons are simply no threat with my build. Fire though can often one-shot me which is why I stack fire resist enchantments on all my armor and I carry fire resist potions to counter it. Madrias
Admittedly, I've played a lot of custom races since then, but I typically start any Elder Scrolls game as a Khajiit. For me, I play games to get away from the real world for a few hours. Being able to pick something not human just means I'm going to do it. Perhaps it's because I like creative writing, and have been working (incredibly slowly) on writing a story, but I find it easier to create a backstory around the beasts. Mostly because I don't find them boring, and I don't feel like I have to recreate myself as this character. I can be whoever I want to be, look however I want to look, and generally can get away with an easier background story for my characters. I'll be the first to admit that playing humans or elves in the Elder Scrolls has never appealed to me. As for Khajiit being my go-to, that comes from preferring my characters to have hair. Horns and feathers just didn't have the same draw. Now, if I could have gotten a head full of snakes, I'd have been impossible to convince away from the Argonians. So, I suppose for me, it comes down to appearances. I don't feel I have to try to make myself, or to try to uphold the standards of a "good looking" character, and it rarely has plot concerns being a non-human race. Lachdonin
For my part, it's simply the fact i don't like any of the Human cultures. They're all the same boring psudo-European analogues with nothing to really make them interesting. Had they followed the PGE1 a bit closer in the creation of Cyrodiil and Skyrim, maybe there'd be something to spark some interest there, but as it stands... They're all just so dreadfully boring. I'd rather an interesting evil group over a boring good group any day.
DoctorKaizeld
All of the beast and elven cultures have real world similarities as well though...
Lachdonin
They absolutely do, but so far, they've been handled in a less boring manner. For the most part. ESO's take on the Green Pact is terribly boring, to the point where i've gone from loving the Bosmer, to just wanting to burn Valenwood down and pretending it never existed... But the Khajiit, Argonians and Dunmer? Fantastic, each is leagues ahead of anything we've gotten about Nords, Redguard, Bretons and Imperials combined. Though, i will admit, Oblivion being so absurdly bad definitely weighs down that group. Edited January 4, 2020 by Lachdonin
DoctorKaizeld
... Oblivion isn't a bad game though and is widely praised though...
Lachdonin
... Oblivion isn't a bad game though and is widely praised though... Not by me it isn't. In fact, i think it's the worst game Bethesda has ever made, and is almost insultingly poorly slapped together and lazy. It is totally devoid of any individual character, lacks any sort of cultural identity for the Cyrods, is an artistic vacuum, is ugly as sin, has some of the worst writing i have experienced outside of an Obsidian game, and lacks a single interesting character. And that's without even delving into it's atrocious gameplay mechanics. Edited January 5, 2020 by Lachdonin
