Where do I find the character presets in fallout4.esm?

Recommended Posts

Hi folks! Thanks for taking a minute to read this.

I have been playing fallout 4 on the console (PS4) for quite a while now. And due to the limitations placed by sony, have been stuck with the mods located on the bethesda site.

And every single one of the presets mods that allow you to use vanilla or modified NPC faces as presets, completely wipes out any use of body alteration mods.

So I've finally got Fallout 4 on my laptop, even though it can't run it. I've DL'd one of the preset mods that is located here on the nexus as well. I've got it open in FO4edit, and I'm looking at all the data for the NPC preset.

I want to compare that info, to one of the vanilla game presets, so that I can find out what's causing the incompatibility, and then fix it. I'm GUESSING it's because the NPC's have different ID data, that relates straight to them AS NPCs, and NPCs use a different body system than the PC does.

So can anybody give me a pointer on where to look for the vanilla presets? I'm having difficulty finding them.

Thanks very much in advance!

The presets themselves are basically normal NPC records with the "Is Chargen Face Preset" flag, and usually with "PresetMale" or "PresetFemale" as the name/editor ID. You can see all of them by navigating to one and sorting by editor ID*.

Which presets show up in character creation, and in what order, is determined by the HumanRace record (00013746), a monstrosity that lists every single tint**, among many, many other things, and cannot be edited by more than one mod at the same time. The list is under the "Male Race Presets"/"Female Race Presets" subrecord inside the HumanRace record:

If you want to have a different preset without touching the HumanRace record, you have to edit one of those NPC records already listed***. If you want to easily compare two records with different FormIDs in xEdit****, select both (ctrl+Click) -> Right Click -> Compare Selected.

*One relevant formID is 0018B5F7

**Generic name for customization options, including everything from tattoos/facepaint to nose shapes

***19 and 20 from my screenshot are added by my character customization mod, so don't use those. The records existed already but were unused.

****xEdit is the generic name for FO4Edit/TES5Edit/SSEEdit.

Heyas VlitS! Thanks very much for the reply! I'm sorry that I took so long getting back to this.

Also Thanks TONS for telling me how to be able to compare two files!!! That was something that was REALLY needing to know.

That should definitely point me in the right direction of trying to figure out why these presets conflict with other mods.

I should be able to try this out in a day or two. Thanks tons! Wish me luck!

Ok. Gave a shot at it for the last few hours.

If I try to extract the preset from the esp of the original mod, and then edit the values and then resave it. It still lists the original mod as a dependency/master. And I can't make it remove the master. I've tried remove, that's not even an available option in Xedit, and I've tried cleaning the masters, and that didn't work either. Now NEITHER of the mods (mine or the original) will load up into a new game. (no big deal there, I can just reinstall the original mod.)

I tried doing an edit of the female preset 05 found in the NPCs list of the Fallout4.esm just playing around with the weights, like skinny, heavy, muscular.... along with messing around with the morph values for arms, legs, head, etc..... and nothing.

Is there a tutorial for making additional presets with xedit anywhere online? All I'm finding is a bunch of vids about how to do it with looks menu, and I can't get looksmenu to fire up. I kinda don't want that anyway, because IF I can ever get this stuff figured out, I'm gonna want to add these morphs and stuff to custom followers.
