Life after XP

Recommended Posts

I have two grannies, XP is like the one that makes the bestest apple pie in the world, whilst all other OS are like the other granny, the one that has a hairy chin and smells of surgical spirits.

But Microsoft are dropping official support for XP SP3 in April 2014, so I guess it's time for me to jump ship and get a new OS.

My current desktop has 2 Gigs of RAM, 250 Gigs Hard-drive.

Which one is likely to best suit me, it has to kind of vaguely work like XP (but with bells and whistles). I was inclined to go down the Windows 7 route, but Vista would be cheaper (probably) and Windows 8 will be up and running by 2014, (however I heard Windows 8 will have a kill application feature, which means if Windows 8 doesn't like software you are running, it will just kill the software dead).

Which OS would you suggest, and why you suggest that particular OS would be helpful. *Hope nobody suggests Mac*

Thanks in advance for any suggestions made.

What's the rush? If your XP is working like you want why change - you have nearly 2 more years to go and Win8 may not be the disaster that so many people are predicting. (I saw the same kind of predictions for every new OS before it was released.)

However, If you want to replace it right now, I would go with Win7 as that is the industry standard right now. In another year, Win8 may be the way to go - we won't know for a while.

With that older PC you may be in the market for a new PC anyway, and it may come with either Win7 or Win8.

bben, I PROMISE you, windows 8 sucks. I use it at work... way more clicks to shut down, harder to reach control panel, you can easily accidentally bring up menus off to the right and left of your screen. The splash menu start screen is cute, but fairly useless. The apps on the start menu consume your screen and take away the convenience of switching windows.

I was skeptical at first with windows 7 (but it grew on me), but nothing will change my mind about 8.

Beware...

I think the OP should stick with XP for now, it's still supported for a few more years and unless you want DX10+ then it should be fine, if you really want a change then Windows 7 really is good. I have to agree with Korodic on Windows 8, it's horrible, I can't for the life of me understand the thinking behind it.

There isn't a rush as such, but if my older PC isn't really up to the task, then I will have to save up some pennies and get a new one. To save up the £500 or so that I will need, will probably take the thick end of a year, so time is not completely on my side. Windows 7 seems better regarded than Vista was, so I probably could work with it, I am less confident in Windows 8, afraid it might be another Vista like disaster.

Just a small question, I see that Windows 7 can run XP in a partition, has anybody actually done that and did the XP work as it should. Of course once XP support is dropped, I suppose a partitioned XP will also be unsupported and no longer able to be patched, against potential threats.

Again thanks for the comments.

£500?

:O

It costs $125 usd where I live.

Wow that a really good price.

At the minute, a new desktop with 4Gig Ram, 500 Gig Hard-drive, 20" Monitor, Windows 7, and a G540GT processor at PC World is £459, and I would have to add on the cost of a graphics card as well. Thats not a top of the range model, but better than what i have.
