Life after XP

Recommended Posts

It's 2012. There's two years yet to go. Why worry now? You should start worrying about February 2014.

And it's not 100% certain that all support will stop, either - XP's very popular and isn't being replaced all that fast, so they might extend security update schedule. Corporate clients have a hard time migrating, they need to get very expensive and unique software rebuilt to work with W7, and the people that made said software have long moved on.

W2003 Server, which is server XP, is supported till 2015.

I do hope so, I have loved XP as an OS, and want to use it long as possible. Windows 8 in particular, scares the beegeebees out of me, and I hope to hang on to XP till Windows 9 comes out, which hopefully will be like XP with bells and whistles.

If XP continues to meet your needs why change until 2014? That will give you time to put cash away and follow what is happing in the hardware and OS stakes in the intervening period.

Whenever you do decide to change, don't go for the "very latest" OS - go for something that has been up and running for a year or two - that way you can be sure that major bugs have been ironed out and that manufacturers have been able to follow with their drivers for printers and other gear.

I moved from XP to windows 7 about 18 months ago mainly because new games required a better platform that what I had (the rig was 5 years old and I had reached the end of the road on processor/memory/video card upgrades for the motherboard - a total change of rig and OS was called for. The transfer went like a dream, all my existing games and saves transferred over without major problems - -he only issue I had was that my scanner manufacturer failed to produce a window 7 driver for the professionam model I had bought 5 years earlier....

Sound advice.

I think I'll wait till I can afford a significantly better piece of hardware, and at the same time go for a newer OS, which is in all likelihood will be Windows 7. The fact that I can run XP within Windows 7, seems like a good way to keep with all my familiar software, until I can find worthy Windows 7 replacements.

Just a stupid question. But on the box, my Oblivion mentions spec/requirements for XP, but not Vista or Windows 7. Does Oblivion actually run on Windows 7, I have the 5th Anniversary Edition. Thanks in advance.
