Editing sound fx files information please?

Hi folks!

I'm hoping that somebody can help me out here. I'm gonna try to go in, and edit some of the sound fx files...specifically the THUNDEROUS sounds when you open a magazine for the first time, and that damned LOUD sound that goes off sometimes when you kill something in VATS.

Both of them have been known to wake up my roommate!

So for these two what filenames would I be looking for?

Can xEdit extract them?

Once extracted, do I need anything special to convert them? Or can I just place a renamed .wav file in the data/sounds/fx (I think that's right) folder with the same filename as the desired fx sound files?

Do I need to create an esp for the override?

TIA!

-Wolf

The first thing you need to do is extracting the "Fallout4 - Sounds.ba2" file, located in your /data folder.

You can use tools like Archive2 (comes with the CreationKit) or BAE (Bethesda Archive Extractor).

Then you have to search for the desired files, you're right about the FX folder, they are most likely in there. This can be tedious, but you will find what you're looking for with a little patience.

Most files in there are either .wav or .xwm format. To convert .xwm files to .wav you can use the tool "MultiXwm", that can be found on the Nexus.

When you're all set, you just create the whole file path in your data folder where your edited files are located and drop them in there. It doesn't matter if they are .xwm or wav. both will work just fine. .xwm is just more compressed and will save discspace.

Edit: Making stuff just quieter there is also another way. If you know exactly what you're looking for, you can lower the "Static Attenuation" in the Sound Descriptor record, using Xedit or the CK.

Hulk- awesome! Thanks very much for the lead! When I get a chance to do some digging, I will do as you've recommended. This will be very helpful, as I've also got some ideas for replacing some of the other sound effects in the game too.

It's been a few years since I've been here on the forums. How do I give you kudos?
