I finally hate something from TW3!

Recommended Posts

I've loved this game from day 1 and struggled to find fault... now I have, big style.

Skellige: choose Svanrige for king... Awfully done: sloppy, careless and just plain unprofessional: let me expand...

I opted not to aid either Cerys or Hjalmar in the King's Gambit quest, just for a change.

Many (Many) hours later, I try to find allies for the battle at Kaer Morhen and get stuck with a quest to sort out Skellige's succession. There are no quest markers. I go to Skellige and talk to Crach, Hjalmar, Cerys and Ermion... nothing except that they get as far as saying that they will help once the throne is decided. I wander Skellige, like the vagabond Geralt is accused of being so often, desperately trying to resolve the quest: all to no avail... because CDPR didn't cater properly for an option they had created.

It seems that I have to enter the Isle Of Mists and fail the 'Brothers in arms, Skellige' quest for the game to continue, but there is no hint about that in game prompts.

I hate failing quests.

I don't mind the outcome of my choice being worse, but I do object to being failed for not doing what CDPR felt was best. I also cannot understand how badly this quest was constructed (as someone who uses the Skyrim CK). To have a quest that has no markers, no conclusion and no way out, other than to fail it, when the player finally gives up searching for a solution: that's just rubbish.

If CDPR didn't want us to go this way, then it should not have been an option in the first place. Given that they gave us the choice, they could have and should have made it playable. I.e. Svanrige being made king should have been in place of the Cerys/Hjalmar coronation and Svanrige could have pledged warriors to the battle at Kaer Morhen.

Pathetic!

End of rant! That's off my chest now.

I'm not into the missions and story as much as I should be. I'm more for the environment which is another way of saying the graphics. And there are a few graphics issues I have with the original game. So I get mods that improve that. But that's my opinion as to what's a visual improvement. Some users like the original graphics more.

I never took this path, but you had to somewhat hack this quest. Hjalmar and Cerys are expected to be dead as effect of succession at the time of the battle at Kaer Morhen.

BTW. better ask on reddit or CDPR forum, this forum is not "oveloaded" with posts.

Thanks for the comments.

I may try the CDPR forum, MegaMaciej. The thing is, I know the game's done and dusted as far as CDPR are concerned. I suppose I put this up as a warning to others not to go this way. It is mightily unsatisfactory.

I continued with the game and found that Ermion turned up at Kaer Morhen, so I still had his handy gas vents to ignite, which made me feel better. Also, I was happy that Folan and Vigi could survive (they always get killed at Kaer Morhen from what I can tell). So 2 mad Skelligers die as a result of my decision but 2 equally insane Skelligers survive! That's life.

MegaMaciej,

I don't know that I'd call it a bug, as such. I have now played right through and got past the point that I see the scene with Svanrigge. it all works as CDPR intended, as far as I am aware... it's just that I strongly disagree with the way they did it. I hate failing quests and normally do everything I can to avoid it.

The quest 'Brothers in arms, Skellige' stays open and is impossible to complete, except by going to the isle of mists when it auto-fails. I've had auto-fails before, with the likes of 'Following the thread' failing when going to Kaer Morhen but in that case I could just re-load the last save and complete it. In this instance I would have to have sacrificed over 20 hours of gameplay to prevent myself failing the quest.

The player doesn't even get any hint that this is a 'terrible' choice when telling Crach that they (the An Craites) can handle it. Crach seems perfectly happy with that. Also, I'd done both Cerys' and Hjalmar's quests, so why won't they help at Kaer Morhen? (Ermion does). You don't even get Winter's Blade. It's as if the entire An-Craite clan has forgotten all you've done for them.

When asking Hjalmar to help, I'd have expected him to say something like "I'm to have a crack at the Wild Hunt, while we're waiting to see who gets crowned king?... you must be mad!... ah, Only kidding Geralt. No An Craite's ever battled such a foe. When do we start?". Instead he just meekly mutters something about having to wait for the succession, as do Cerys and Crach.

Reading the final game credits after defeating eredin, you are told that both Cerys and Hjalmar were killed attacking the Nilfgardian fleet. Even that seems lame... Hjalmar I could understand, but after everything Cerys says in the game for her to impulsively sail out to attack Nilfgard seems completely out of character.

The entire storyline looks like an afterthought.

No, I don't think it's a bug. I'd like to see a mod to alter the way it goes... any takers?
