Is oblivion Fun to Play after playing skyrim?

Out of interest, is there a set of mods which improve the look and feel of Oblivion without altering gameplay too much (unless they improve on bugs etc.)?

I fancy giving it another go, but would like to make it look as 'modern' (i.e. detailed graphics etc.) as possible.

There are things like Quarl's Texture pack that are supposed to improve the graphics, but there's no fixing the horrible face renderings I don't think. Everything I've read indicates that the game engine uses the facegen software to build character faces and, IMO it makes everyone look like they're a distant cousin of shrek.

There are also some bug fixes like the unofficial official patch or the unofficial official mod patch, but unfortunately again there are some side effects. I couldn't get the UMP patch to install on my game, even after consulting the author (who gave up pretty quickly after asserting that the patch doesn't normally install without errors). After install the game would crash at startup every time until I removed it. Many people use it however, so I'm certain it's some kind of conflict with my system.

The downside is, after reading the changelog, you're always going to be at the mercy of the authors interpretation of just what a "bug" is.

For example, from the UOP, changing a character's health level to match existing characters, like:

"The lich Erandur-Vangaril will now have proper health (15x the player's level, as is standard for all liches, instead of merely 15 which made for an anticlimactic battle) "

Or changing ai behavior:

"All of Sakeepa's (Aleswell) sheep will now properly follow him during his shepherding, rather than just the rams "

Just two examples I pulled real quick from the version history.

100 hours into Oblivion and you're still level 4, Stemin? I've never heard of such of thing happening. I suggest there may be something wrong with your setup, especially seeing as how you can't seem to install the UOP, which has installed without a hitch for me every time I've had to reinstall Oblivion for one reason or another.

As for the quests, I think about all Beth knows how to do is create fetch quests. That's mostly what we have in Skyrim, too. Still, I don't have any problem finding things to do in Oblivion, although I'll admit I don't play it unmodded any more. Even during my first couple playthroughs when all I was running with was the UOP, I got many hours of enjoyment out of it and was never bored until I got to high levels and started one-shotting everything. It happens faster in Oblivion because the leveling system is garbage, but it happens in Skyrim, too. Just as modders have fixed this issue in Skyrim, so they did for Oblivion, too.

To the original post...

Do you like waffles?

Do you think asking everyone else if they like waffles will change your opinion of them or will they taste the same?

Whether or not the game would be fun would totally be based on your own perception. Personally, I thought Oblivion was a lot of fun... then, but I could never go back.

I always felt that they made Skyrim to be more.. Console Friendly.

The Sliders in Character Creation or the inventory system.

For example, if you have it on PC (Which i'm guessing pretty much everybody on the nexus does - either bought legally, or pirated). If you have a lot of cosmetics installed such as hairs, hair colours etc; you would have difficulty selecting them all because it is just a slider and doesn't even have any names..

The thing which is very good, and i'm glad they have done.

Created everything for PC first, textures etc (because PC's are far more powerful and it looks better on PC) then they ported that them down to console at a lower resolution; so Skyrim maximises the use of Hardware (At least in a time frame until i gets enhanced further by ENB Injector etc) - Skyrim fixed and removed things which were good additions to the game.

Oblivion is worth the play. But it is very unstable.

Oblivion is my favorite RPG of all time and my first Elder Scrolls. I played it on PS3 and still find it to be better than Skyrim on PC with mods. I probably have too much nostalgia for oblivion to give a fair assessment but then again only the OP will know for him/her self.

Everything about Oblivion is dated. My guess is it would be hard to follow Skyrim with Oblivion. But I will leave you with this: If you love/like the style of gameplay that only Bethesda can make, Oblivion might be right up your ally as they are similar.

Oblivion has a particular feel and charm to it. The quests (not the main story) are better, way better. The game feels more like an rpg than skyrim... The land is better, skyrim obviously has better graphics but the design and feel of the land is better in Oblivion.. Try out the mods and have a wonderfull time. What i find the hardest is to go back to oblivion graphics, specially the way the npcs look.

My recomendation, yes try it out, but mod it, vanilla will bore you most likely.

I've read from a random mod description page that the leveling system in Oblivion was very painful. True? From what I've gathered the general consensus is the older ES games would smash Skyrim if they didn't have the graphics of when they were made. I wouldn't know since Skyrim is the only ES game I've played - please feel free to facepalm at my reverse-Pedobear too-youngness.
