There's only one place to get it. Silverclock.org I think. Download it, save it in a folder you name Fallout downloads. Put folders in there so you can keep up with what everything is, so you don't have to download it again later. Here you would put it in a folder named Tools with all the other tools you get or in it's own folder named FOSE. After that you extract it, look in there until you see the folder where there are a bunch of numbered .dll files, grab all that an dump it in the Fallout 3 directory, this is where the Fallout3.exe is located, which typically is located C:/Bethesda Softworks/Fallout 3 though the default will install it in program files. With Steam it's only a matter of installing steam outside of program files, an games will automaticly go there. Though it issues it causes vary from person to person. Some have no problems, others do.

That is the folder you installed the game to when you installed it.

When you do find it, make a shortcut as you will want to be able to find it again later.

DVD default location C:\program files(x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout3

Steam default C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout3

The program files(x86) location is protected by the Microsoft UAC which can cause problems with mods and some utility programs

Preferred location - for DVD C:\Games\Fallout3 (need to uninstall completely and reinstall)

Preferred location Steam - C:\Games\Steam\steamapps\Common\Fallout3 (you will need to move the steam client

Select the files in the Winzip an drag those to a temporary folder on the desktop, this will extract them. You can also use the context menu built into windows, by right clicking an extract here if you have the zip somewhere you can use it. WinRar works a little differently, but in both cases there are more than one way to extract from these compressed folder archives. You're goal is to get it out of the archive or unpacked. Then move that into the correct folder. Don't forget to clean up the files after you moved it. If you download it, then keep a downloads folder. Extract from there onto the desktop into temporary folders, then move that into the game. Then clean up the temporary folders on the desktop. Try to figure out a better way to do it, learn the way you like to do it best.

Geek 101: (Warning - simplified explanation intended for people who just don't know.)

Basic file system tutorial link - http://www.bellcrest.net/Tutorials/filestructure.html

For this specific example - putting something in the FO3 game folder:

The C:\Program files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\Common\Fallout3

Is actually a set of directions to tell the computer where to find a program. You can use the directions to find it also.

What is says is:

Start at the top level, the entire C:\ Drive - this is typically the place where everything on your computer is placed.

The easiest way to find it is to click on 'My computer' or just 'computer' from the Windows start menu (it will be on the right side of the start menu)

In the screen that opens you should see a C:\ drive - click on that. A list of the folders and files in your computer will open. find the next level, in this case, The \Program Files (x86) \ - this is the place that Windows installers like to put everything - whether it really needs to be there or not.

RIGHT Click on it - then in the new list of folders find Steam - click on that

Keep going through the list until the last folder \Fallout3 - when you click on that you will be looking at the folders and files that are needed to run FO3. In that list, the game program (this is what you are running when you start the game ) is named Fallout3.exe (Or, if you have the files set to 'not show common extensions' just Fallout3) If that file is there then this is were you put it.

To make a shortcut, RIGHT click on the \Fallout3. folder in the file list.

Find 'create shortcut' in the menu and LEFT click on it. The new shortcut will be added to the end of the list. NOTE: If you close that folder and later reopen it - the shortcut will be in the alphabetical order and NOT at the end)

LEFT click on your new shortcut and pick Send to - in the drop down menu select Desktop. This will put the shortcut on your desktop - it can be moved to anywhere you want it.- clicking on it will take you directly to that folder.

If nothing else, working with mods will teach you how to get around in computer file structures.
