Sudden display problems.

Recommended Posts

Just within the last few minutes I had a brief power loss due to weather. However at the time I was playing Oblivion, computer reset, everything seemed fine, was a bit pressed for time, wanted to test changes to a mod before class. I restarted Oblivion too soon, before the ATI catalyst loaded up, The result was having a black bar around the display. I exited out, hoping I could just reset the display. However now, whenever I start any fullscreen application the right and bottom of what should be displayed is cut off, and there is a bar on the left side that I cannot move my mouse onto (like a display position issue). I've tried restarting and changing my settings a little, hoping that it would correct itself. Nothing. Inside windows the display looks right, it's only when I start a game like Oblivion that it ends up shifting over. Tested with another game, same issue, and didn't have that game open when the problem happened (obviously) so it isn't something specific to the game.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice to offer in how to fix this. Everything within the game displays fine, just the screen position is out of wack.

Using a Radeon X1600 Pro if it matters.

Thanks in advance.

This seems to only happen in cases where the fullscreen that the game uses is a different resolution than my desktop. If I lower my desktop resolution smaller, the problem goes away. However I happen to like my desktop as large as I can get it, and having to re-arrange my desktop icons every time I play something at a smaller resolution (often something I can't adjust) is a bit of an annoyance.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try using the manual adjustments on your monitor itself.....a power spike or fluctuation at the time of the power outage might have hosed the monitors settings. That is what is sounds like....the windows controls will not reset this condition and it needs to be done manually, seldom happens and most don't even realize they have manual adjustments as they are preset from the factory to display properly and seldom need adjusting.

Tried that, seemed to help somewhat, but still have the problem. The problem seems to only be present when using certain resolutions, which are, unfortunately the default (only) resolutions available for that program. More specifically 1024x768, desktop is set to 1280x1024.

  • 2 months later...

i know its a bit late, but if you havnt got a new card, and still have the same problem,

What it sounds like is your video card settings are over riding your game settings ( if u dont see the black box prob on your desktop etc ).

chances are, if your desktop etc run fine, and the game works fine on same res as desktop, your CCC is over riding it all.

i cnt really tell you more then that as im not really an ATI know how guy, but looking through your CCC you should see options for that under the display settings, otherwise, just wiping your drivers and re-installing them will fix it ( sets to default settings if you uninstall first. )

Happy new years!
