SeraphTC
Another worthwhile suggestion. However...big drum roll... I followed the link supplied by Blaufrosch, and then followed a few more from the page that he linked to. Before even attempting to install Skyrim, I deleted existing Steam rules in AVG and set up new ones. I clicked links on the page our colleague linked and arrived at what ports to open for Steam. Now this was strangely familiar because when I was first in the GW2 beta I had to do this to make AVG let it run. Applied meh new roolez, changed my download region to Ireland, and it is now downloading at a respectable 1Mb/s. I shall be awarding knighthoods to the good and patient people in this thread who have made this possible and who have calmed me down and got me out of my war chariot. Ah, good ol' AVG. I got fed up with it myself, I use Avast and Comodo as they give me less grief. (Not had a single problem with them, and I don't find them 'over protective' either). Having said that, AVG is good, I just find it a bit over-zealous sometimes. Glad you got it sorted :)

Brandy1123
STEAMypile is rediculous. Bethesda even more so for the honor of being shut out of the game you paid for and for having to be tiesd into that GARBAGE (read STEAMypile). "It" closed my game down last evening with no warning even though I have and verified no updates selected. It did. For the remainder of its wonderful little take over, my game, the one I purchased was not even vailable for offline play. Now, Isn't that special. When the wonderful event had passed, guess what? STEAMypile servers were unavailable to play. Also, at that point, I was unable to log in offline so that option was dead too. Thanks Bethesda for implementing such a wonderful and user friendly environment to hang us in. I just adore paying for rights to LOAD software then having to ask permission AND allow virus like software to inundate my registry, my bandwidth, my storage, and my computing habbits. We see how you" roll". Next time, beep the horn before you startup the bus.
ginnyfizz
It is even more ridiculous that at one time after Dawnguard came out, I did a totally vanilla install on the laptop to test out Dawnguard and it ran then. This time it would not run on the laptop. Go figure...
