editing mesh using .obj?

As long as it is not skinned (like armor, bow, crossbow whatever - so the mesh stays in position while movement/animation) yes - rigid objects are no problem like swords, shields, buildings whatever.

You have to weighten skinned objects in a 3D Editor that comes with a nif plugin (like 3dsMax or Blender) if you mess arround with the mesh...minor edits will work like scaling but most other stuff require more modifications.
