A first for me...

Ok I knew Hamming got out alive cause I'd met him before at Froki's home. But I just started a new game with updated mods. I found a woman wondering the road at the junction where the path from the cave meets up with the road. Hadvar ran past her like she wasn't even there. But I had to stop and try to chat. Never met anyone there before and didn't think any mod I had added anyone in that area. Turns out her name was Matlara and she only had basic greeting sounds and no dialog options. Checked wiki and she's one of the residents of Helgen that's supposed to be in pain and dying or dead when you are making your way to the keep.

I doubt this is game breaking,

still curious tho, any idea how she could have survived?

My guess would be the 'rats' added by SkyTEST gave her a good fright before the execution and she ran out the gate :P

Lol, as a general rule most mods shouldn't be installed until leaving the Helgen cave because they can have strange issues with that whole intro sequence. I had my head on the chopping block for ages cause Alduin would never land and start havoc, not to mention the hilarious carriage bug that's going around on Youtube.

Texture mods are fine before but really that's it, i doubt this is game breaking though.

On the subject of Alduin not landing, that's not caused by mods, because I got that (twice) on my last-started character before I ever installed a mod. It was disturbing that Alduin wanted me to die :P

I think someone should give people in Helgen more dialogue options just in case they do manage to survive like that. ^^ But that would be close to - gasp! - storytelling.

Yeah to be honest you get CTDs rather than weird side effects, just assumed Alduin was mod related cause it only happened one time. Roaming Npcs though is strange as there is no way for them to get out i thought, unless Alduin picked them up in his mouth and flung her over the fence. She'd have a tale to tell.

I was more put off by the fact that everybody was content to just let Helgen become a bandit hideout. Nobody thought to try to rebuild or move back in? Even after the Dragonborn becomes a super hero and on numerous occasions the town guard alone was enough to take out a dragon. Even when a dargon comes and murders a towns population, after a few "Yay we killed a dragon" and "Such a shame they died" comments, the survivors carry on like nothing ever happened. Even if there was no survivors, there was a reason people moved there in the first place. I'd actually be quite content to pick up a mod that lets you rebuild Helgen and have the Khajiit caravans move there. They don't care about dragons and since nobody else but bandits are interested in the place, why wouldn't they like a nice place to settle down and use a a head quarters?

The Helgen issue has been endemic to ES games since at least Oblivion, where an entire city (Kvatch) was laid to waste and never rebuilt, even though it had a history of rebuilding after disasters. It was up to the modding community to come up with mods (two, I think, although there might have been more) that rebuilt Kvatch. The Temple district of Imperial City was left in shambles after the Oblivion Crisis, and the Bruma Mages Guild burned forever. Bethesda simply doesn't bother to "clean" up after these things, apparently thinking that players won't ever go back to those places and wonder why nobody has done anything about them. Beth didn't learn from Oblivion. It's back in Skyrim. Helgen never gets rebuilt. None of the cities impacted by the Civil War ever get rebuilt. Modders are fixing these issues, and I use a mod that restores the cities that come under siege. I even think there's at least one project underway to rebuild Helgen.

In a way I can see how the developers might shy away from a "Helgen Rebuilt" project, since to make it make any sense it would have to be done over time, with little things being fixed at appropriate intervals. Just deleting the destroyed city and dropping the (almost) complete initial version into the game would be immersion-breaking for sure. Plus, much of "intact Helgen" really isn't functional, with some of the buildings just being props, rather than actual buildings. It's still a start for an enterprising modding team, though. The Kvatch mod I use in Oblivion was a huge project with the player involved in various quests related to the rebuilding of the city. We need something like this for Helgen.

If only I knew how... I'd love to do this and I think recruiting some of the wanderers you meet would be Cool. Talsgar and the Khajiits. Maybe some of the homeless folk. It could end up being just a nice friendly area with some merchants and not much going on

If you run any bat batch text documents that sets players essential that uploaded of the text bat set esssential file might of set her essential by accident this is a bat batch mod link on the nexusmod section for example Essential Followers

since I have no clue what you just said.... I highly doubt that this would be the case.

Ever since I discovered the Ebony Blade, my followers are not essential :P

For some reason housecarls do not get any coffins placed in any hall of the dead when they die. I so wanted to see Lydia's coffin and see a plaque read "I use to be an adventurer till I stepped in front of my Thane and took an arrow in the knee"

A rebuild of Helgen might be nice, but that is beyond my talents....
