Reducing clutter in Vortex folder

Recommended Posts

I have installed Fallout New California and with the latest patch of v213 to v221 I now have what seems duplication inside Vortex. Inside \Vortext\falloutnv\mods is a subfolder for the patch with the patch executable in it. But then in \Vortex\downloads\\falloutnv is what I believe is the .7z file I downloaded from the site.

Are both of these needed to run the FONVNC game properly? Can I remove one of them without any side effect?

I ask because I migrated from 1TB HDD to a 500GB SSD and now I see articles that say an SSD runs best when free space is kept a close as possible to a minimum of 50%. Right now I'm at 46% free and I'd like to increase that especially if I can get rid of any clutter duplication.

From what I know of the older NMM, it had an actual download folder where you keep the unpacked mods. Then it has like, a folder where it keeps essentially the brains like, where it remembers what a file was before you changed it via mod. And then theres the file in the actual skyrim folder which the games loads up.

I only know this because I had before deleted one of the NMM folders since it was huuuge and I was trying to save room. It ended up deleting all the mods etc, meaning changing my game from that point would probably f*#@ things up, tho Skyrim itself still worked normally.

Im guessing Vortex is a bit more complicated tho since it was rebuilt from scratch. To play it safe, don't delete anything. But maybe someone here knows what you can safely remove~

Downloads are where Vortex keeps your original mod archives. After installation, you only need them if you want to reinstall.

Your mod staging folder is where your "Live" mod lives. Let Vortex manage this folder.

If you install multiple versions of New California, they will show up on the mod dropdown.

One of the options there is to remove old versions. That is an especially good idea if they are big.

While it's possible to delete the archives from the downloads-directory after you've installed the mod, in practice it's normally not a good idea since this means you can never re-install the mod without first having to re-download the archive. With all the mods that is permanently removed from Nexus, or older versions permanently going missing while you want to continue using the old version, it's recommended to keep the downloaded archives.

Since the download-directory can easily reside on an old, slow hd with lots of free space, at least personally I keep the downloads, except if I know I will never use the mod again, example due to a new mod version being released and I know won't go back to old version.
