dfar
Hi. While I know I'll never get anywhere with making a Skyrim mod, I decided to tinker with the Editor and read some tutorials, but - among many other things - I'm having issues with cells. In particular, tutorials usually start out by suggesting creating an interior cell, placing interior static objects and focus on that first. My problem so far is that I wanted to start outside, making a ruined city, and only then adding interiors. Question is, is it possible to create an interior cell and then define it as an exterior one? I've been browsing the Editor, checking outside cells, but every time I try to modify one (let alone move it), the program becomes increasingly slow and unstable. I'm not even sure of the total landmass size I'd want, but I'd reckon it'd be around twenty times the size of Whiterun (I see Tamriel registered in the Editor; while curious about using it as a template, I'm afraid just viewing it will explode my PC). Any suggestions? I've also tried making a landmass from scratch but the end result, so far as the Editor is concerned, seems tiny (placing architecture prefabs make terrain that seemed an island look like a puddle). AnkhAscendant
It seems like you have a really ambitious goal in mind. I can't answer about redefining cells, but I imagine the point behind tutorials suggesting starting with making a room or a house is just to get you used to running the CK. Start small, get used to it, and then move on to bigger things. As for "Tamriel" in the editor, I think that's just everything that isn't anything else. Most all of the wilderness areas and such. I don't know that you can actually see the entire province... I have a feeling trying would be bad for most PCs. o_O
dfar
Well, true. I suppose it might be ambitious, though I've managed to cut down on a list of things I wanted to a list of things I *think* I can do. I really wanted to go for the "ruined" feel without necessarily having to work with dungeons, hence the size. Most ruins in Skyrim feel too... orderly, I guess (even Winterhold, which underwent *that* event, only has a couple of cracks on its structure), and I wanted to go against that a bit. Clearly you're still learning how to use the Creation Kit. I'd recommend watching the official Bethesda tutorial videos first before beginning your project. Once you've finished watching all of them, you should have a good grasp of the creation kit. If you want to press on ahead anyway, I can answer some questions. For starters if you're building the outside of a city then you'll be doing that in a exterior cell. This cell would either be in the Tamriel worldspace, where all of the game's exploration takes place or you would be working in a worldspace of your own making. Considering the scale of the city you have in mind, you'll pretty much have to make your own worldspace as there really isn't enough free space in the Tamriel worldspace for your project. dfar
Thank you for the tips! I'll be sure to check more advanced tuts, then. So far I've taken up to an exterior cell (no parent location yet), to test out one of the things I wanted to make. Ruins - not the derelict kind, just setting up architecture pieces that have collapsed - are pretty hard.
