What are the guitar parts you like to play best (solos, riffs, whatever?) ? And the guitar parts you'd love to play but you can't? List a few titles, I'm dying to discover some new gems I have overlooked :)

SONGS I LIKE TO PLAY MOST:

- Shine on you crazy diamond, by Pink Floyd

- Sultans of swing, by Dire Straits

- Hotel California, by the Eagles

- Orion, by Metallica (I can't play the last solo yet, though)

- Stairway to Heaven, by Led Zeppelin

- Nothing else matters, by Metallica

- Bohemian Rhapsody, by Queen (I can also play the piano part :) )

- Almost everything else by Queen

- Black night, by Deep Purple

- Sweet home Alabama, by Lynyrd Skynyrd

- The wind cries Mary, by Jimi Hendrix

SONGS I'M TRYING TO LEARN TO PLAY

- Highway star, by Deep Purple (the solos)

- Aqualung, by Jethro Tull (the solo)

- Little wing, by Jimi Hendrix

- November rain, by G'n'R (the last solo)

- Dream a little dream, by the Mamas and the Papas

- Cliffs of Dover, by Eric Johnson

What about you?

Any suggestions of other things I may have overlooked?

I realise this thread is rather meaningless in its intent, but, hey, that's what OT is for, isn't it? :)

I personally play bass guitar. My favorite thing to play (when the mood so moves me) is Apostrophe (‘) by Frank Zappa. Many bassists like to do Primus songs, because, obviously, most are written for Lead Bass. I like to do some Primus, but certain tracks, such as Tommy the Cat almost require a six-string fretless to perform correctly (which I do not have). I also have Money nailed down pretty well (Pink Floyd) and One of These Days (a deceitfully simple song for bass).

A sample of the tablature for Tommy the Cat (modified for 4-string bass):

D:|--4-------------------|-44-----------777x5x3x2x1x-|
A:|----3x5x7x---7-6-5-0--|----3x5x7x-----------------|
E:|----------------------|---------------------------|

Here is a quick run down:

Favorites to play:

Apostrophe (‘) – Frank Zappa

Catholic Girls – Frank Zappa

Bass line from Son of Mr. Green Genes – Frank Zappa

Money – Pink Floyd

One of These Days – Pink Floyd

Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver – Primus

Dominoes – Syd Barret (as played on David Gilmore Live)

Born On the Bayou – CCR

I’m Your Captain – Grand Funk RR

Just about any Beatles

Would like to learn:

Tommy the Cat – Primus

Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow/Nanok Rubs It – Frank Zappa

Devil Woman – Cliff Richards

Are you Gonna Be my Girl – Jet

That is about all I can think of for now.

Some of the songs I play I don't even listen to from a cd or anything. I just play really any song that I can. Note that I am not that good at guitar, just started this year, but I can play these songs well. (but I don't play the solos)

Songs I can play:

-Crazy Train, Black Sabbath

-Iron Man, Black Sabbath

-Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana

-Back in Black, AC-DC

-Hells Bells, AC-DC

-Trogdor, StrongBad (homestarrunner fans will know)

-Enter Sandman, Metallica

(not a very long list...lol)

Songs I am working on/want to learn:

-Seek & Destroy, Metallica (just learned how to palm mute, so I just got the intro)

(this isn't a very long list either, do you guys have any suggestions for a semi-begginer guitarist?)

I want to start. All my friends tell me that the Fneder Squier Stratocaster sucks, but I'm gonna get it anyway, because I can get the Strat Pack, which has everything I need to start. After I learn to play, then I'll buy a new guitar.

I personally do not think there is anything wrong with the Squire Strat… It is a good guitar for the money, and excellent for beginners, especially when they may not be sure that the guitar is “their” instrument. And this is coming from a musical “snob”. Look what most all the “great” guitarists play: The Fender Stratocaster. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, David Gilmore, Gary Moore, Jimmy Hendrix, Frank Zappa. They all play Strats. I really do not believe a “first” guitar should be a $10,000 Byrdland, or even a $2,500 PRS. My first guitar was a $300 Harmony Les Paul clone (albeit a good one). Just remember the first rule of audio: If it sounds good it is. ^_^

True dat man I started on some no name brand I think it was called a series 10 but it sounded good and got me the basics down. ALot of beginners get into it w/ the misconception the better the gear the better theyll play.............. "I bought an Ibaneze Iceman and i can't play power chords WTF!!!!!!!" then they pawn it off for much less than they paid for it and complain that playing guitar is hard. NO!!!!!!!!!!!! My guitarist started off w/ a squier and it really helped the foundation for his playing. Just rock w/ it man, then later on when your shredding like Steve Vai you can go out and get that dream guitar you've always wanted ^_^ .
