Sorry but, when you reach the main menu do you "press play" ? if so that´s where the problem might be, this might sound wrong but, when you are there press exit and then click on the SKSE loader ..If you are already doing that I apologize, but starting out I did have the same problem as you and only with the help of more experienced players did i discover that step...

Ah, what (I think) is called "the console". I didn't realize it was open so early on. I figured you had to be literally "In game" to use it, not just in the initial menu shell. (but thinking about it for a moment it actually makes sense...developers would want to be able to debug from start to finish.)

~ opens the console.

I start my game from a shortcut I created right from the skse64_loader,exe file, located in

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\

(your location *should be something very similar (maybe a different drive letter, depending on your setup), or identical

To be honest, I didn't realize for the first several months that Vortex had the ability to encapsulate game start links, so I took direction from some post or maybe even SKSE "canonical" directions (not sure at this point tbh). I haven't deviated from that, simply because I already have the shortcut in my quickstart group now, along with skyrim utilities (BodySlide, Fallrim Tools Re-saver, SSEEDIT, etc). It's a more familiar way for me due to my "advanced age" and many gray hairs (and 35 years of computer experience...kinda set in my ways.

So here's what I'd like you to try. Create a shortcut to SKSE64_loader.exe and drop it on your desktop. Start the game from that shortcut. If it works, then you know something's funky with your Vortex "start Skyrim" button or whatever it is. I suggest this avenue of debug because I've read a few posts from people who traced their issues to that... it's anecdotal, but who knows, maybe you're one of them...

I presume you know how to create a shortcut. if not it's easy

  1. navigate to the directory where skse64_loader.exe is located.
  2. locate and select skse64_loader.exe
  3. right click
  4. select create shortcut
  5. cut and paste or copy paste the shortcut to your desktop

then try firing up the game using that shortcut.

Skip using the console until you load game. fwiw, having the console open interferes with "normal" game operations, since you're working in a command shell with console open. (again, you may already know this. of course I'm just trying to be thorough)

...I'm not savvy enough about Skyrim to be condescending, except to those who are savvy enough, AND who act condescending to me. - If you get my drift.

My comment wasn't pertaining to anyone in this post. It was from another conversation while I was frustrated. My bad. So I was being sincere to all here. I greatly appreciate. It's not easy being computer illiterate and trying to do this without an instructor next to ya. You guys are awesome. I'm on the right track because of you guys. Thank you.
