Sierra419
I'm new to Skyrim and I've put around 50 hours into the game already and loving it. I've got around 70 mods (mostly textures and graphics), everything has been running fine for the 3 weeks I've been playing. I was trying out various enb mods and the skyrim config ini. I deleted all of the enb mods, put the skyrim config back to default and deleted it, and it still crashes. What's happening is my game will either hang on the load screen and load forever until I CTRL+ALT+DEL it or it will load like normal and I'll walk for 30 seconds and ctd. I dont know whats causing this. I used the back up SKyrim.ini and SkyrimPref.ini folders- no luck- I even deleted my SKYRIM.ini and SKYRIMPREF.ini folders and let the game create new ones to no luck. I havent downloaded any mods in two week so I dont think its a modding issue. I upped my uGrids to 7 and then reverted to the default 5 still with ctd. I can play the game for as long as I want if I stay in the area but once I start moving so far away its CTD. All of my saves are like this. Please help me fix this. If I loose my save game I might just cry because I'm not starting over.
Georgiegril
I upped my uGrids to 7 and then reverted to the default 5 still with ctd. That is at least part of your problem. You cannot increase your grids and then revert back without causing major game instability. It is not something you can fix, you will need to start over, unless you have a game backup file (not just a savegame). Carefully reading about any changes you are considering can help this from happening again. Good resources Geforce tweak guide (discusses things like the grids to load, other ini changes and settings and how they affect quality/performanceBben's help blog discusses how to make a clean reinstall, properly install mods and also troubleshooting procedure. Sierra419
There's got to be a way to fix it. Can't I just put ugrids back? Is this even my problem? Anyone?
blitzen
Theoretically, you can revert back to the default ugrids. You have to reset it to 5 while the game is running, via the console, and save it. There are instructions on exactly how to do it somewhere on this site. EDIT: Try this (copied from another websitel): Backup SkyrimPrefs.ini, Skyrim.ini and your Skyrim ‘Saves’ folder.Right click on Skyrim.ini in My Documents\My Games\Skyrim and uncheck ‘Read Only’ in the file’s properties.Load your last save game.Press tilde on your keyboard, most commonly placed directly to the left of ‘1.’ If it is elsewhere, the keyboard symbol should be ` or ~.In the now-visible in-game console type setini “ugridstoload:general” 5Hit Return on your keyboard.Type saveiniHit Return on your keyboard.Type refreshiniHit Return on your keyboard.Close the console using tilde.Create a new save game.Exit Skyrim.Delete Skyrim.ini in My Documents\My Games\Skyrim.Reload the Skyrim configuration tool.Close the tool.Re-tweak Skyrim.ini if necessary (and SkyrimPrefs.ini if it has since been modified).Reload Skyrim and your most recent save.Enjoy the game. **Update**: Something allegedly happened with one of the patches. The saveini command reportedly creates the new ini file in the Data folder instead of in the default location. These steps would have to be adjusted to account for that. Also, this may not even be your problem. I've had the same sort of thing happen. I've never gone 2 entire weeks without adding/deleting/updating mods though, so I have always attributed my problems to recent changes. I'm sure it's possible for something to go wrong with the game without warning though, even with no changes. Sierra419
Well I tried everyones advice. Nothing worked. I even started a new game and it ctd right when I had to choose to go with the imperial officer or the stormcloak into the keep. As soon I choose either one it crashes. I'm starting to suspect that its not a ugrids problem but I dont know what else it could be.
Georgiegril
It may not be the ugrids that is causing it. I'm not familiar with the fix blitzen provided, but their advice is always worth trying.I'm guessing, however, that by everyones advice you didn't mean going to Bben's blog and following the troubleshooting procedure. Given the number of changes you have made, it is possible that you may never find the root of your troubles, but his guide is the procedure that is most likely to help you pinpoint it. Also the pinned thread at the top of this forum has a lot of info that may help you.
blitzen
I would try a few standard things. Get to an interior non-respawning cell and wait for 31 days. There is a "No Boring Sleep Wait" mod on the nexus that allows you to do that in one shot. That will allow all the cells to reset, which tends to clear issues related to spawns. That, of course, may do nothing. Do some routine checks. Make sure your savegames are normal sizes. Turn on Papyrus debug logging and see if any mods are writing a lot to the log. We don't really have much info on your game, like if you are using BOSS to set your load order, how you install mods, which mods you are using, etc. Troubleshooting Skyrim with mods can be a slow, painful, and complex process at times. Sierra419
thanks you guys. I'm going to try waiting 31 days ingame before i do anything drastic like completely uninstalling the game. FYI, I use NMM to download my mods, for every mod I download I carefully read the installation instructions because some mods need special treatment, and I use BOSS after every mod installation, and then I move some like Deadly Dragons and UFO to the very bottom of the load order where theyre supposed to be. I'm going to try a few things and let you guys know how it goes.
Sierra419
just wanted to let you guys know that after 4 days and probably 15 hours I finally fixed the problem. I backed up a few of my most recent save files, uninstalled all my mods, and unistalled skyrim and every folder in both directories related to skyrim, reinstalled skyrim, reinstalled mods, put my save games back into the now empty save file, and voila. Thanks for all your suggestions and help.
