Questions about uGrids

Hi, I'm relatively new to the game. I've searched and read all the posts I could find mentioning changing the uGridsToLoad parameter in the .ini file. I've read the tweak guide. Today I actually changed the value to 7, went out wandering around and must say the effect was spectacularly noticeable. I've got a GTX 580 with 3G, i7-3930 @ 3.2GHz and 16G of RAM. I've installed WATER, Vurt's Flora Overhaul, Bethesda HD DLC and Climates of Tamriel. I thought the game looked great before, but - wow, and my FPS are still up against the vsync limit.

So, my query is, if it looks that much better at 7, why not 9 or 11? The consensus seems to be that those values are not stable. I've actually tried 11 briefly and it drops FPS into the 40s. So what do people think? I apologize if I'm being repetitive, but I couldn't find a recent, all in one place discussion.

Yes, as I said I've read the tweak guide. I was hoping for some advice from people who've tried different settings. I ran around for a while today on 11 and found that the game would lock up sometimes, usually when coming into an area with a really long viewing distance. So far 9 seems to work OK, with no fps loss.

Actually, the guide says 7 is the most stable, but I get the message. I'll figure it out myself and report my findings back here, for anyone who might be interested.

You know what, I'm sorry. I have a migraine today and I realize I have been a little snarky. Please forgive me.

Here is my point, hopefully more politely given:

The reason that 11 may not be even better if you find 7 or 9 working well is that the more grids that you load, the greater the stress on your memory, and even if it doesn't crash you may find more stuttering, etc. It is not just the terrain that loads, but all the NPCs, critters, etc. The game is set up so that in most places (mountaintops the exception) you really won't benefit from a much higher gridstoload because you simply aren't able to see that far, anyway.

If you were to sift through all the posts on this forum about this topic, what I think you will find is that most people who have changed their ugrids stick to 7, with smaller numbers of people finding 9 works better for them, some preferring to drop down to five, and a very few who like their results with 11 or 3.

.

The Geforce guide is based on their people testing the game on a wide range of computers and graphics (Nvidia) cards. They provide results based on a much more controlled testing methodolgy than what one might find on a forum like this. However, game performance on your computer is based on the specific variables of your rig. Even two people with apparently identical set-ups could find themselves getting different results due to small variations caused by manuafacturing, etc. So ultimately all of us can only find out what works best for our own system through tinkering til we get it the way we like it.

Good luck, and again please accept my apologies!

Georgiegril, thanks for the summary. That's the kind of information I was looking for. I'm not afraid to experiment and I've had no problems with the game, but so many people have that I thought it better to seek advice before I screwed around with things I don't understand. I've been playing around with it all day and can report that 11 causes lockups (image on screen, but no response to controls) even on my relatively high-powered rig (I'm running all the graphics maxed out and still getting 60 fps). So far 9 seems stable, though I'll have to take screenshots before I'm sure it's much better than 7. Thank you for your help.

I get migraines too (I'm a man). As an alchemist in-game, I recommend feverfew as a preventative if you haven't tried it.
