What is the common cause of crashing in exteriors?

What are the common causes of crashing in exteriors? I'd like to know so that there will be something to watch out for, and it might save time by narrowing in on suspect mods rather than disabling everything one by one.

the fastest way. would be to go to a spot you have Identified as a trouble spot in your game, a known CTD action on approach. Just prior to getting to that point, Console the following------> tgm / enter and then / tcl / Enter. Exit console and approach the spot you know where it is going to crash on you. IF it does not ? then perhaps you have an inventory item that is in conflict with that region, it's possible, But if it fezzes up on you and nothing responds, a mod that effects regional specs of the game world is at fault. It has code in it in direct conflict with your display driver, Possibly a corrupted file. To inspect a corrupted File, we use tsnip, but there are procedures required after fixing the bad code in the file, it's best to re download a fresh copy rather than messing with all of that. Knowing what you are using as you posted on our thread, No doubt, a corruption has taken place, Wrye flash simply made an adjustment not meant for the games engine to process, it does happen. that's why we don't support unknowns. Also, If you have fomm installed, It has a method of obtaining a saved games load order, this will show if you in fact have an out of order set of mods. that too will cause this issue.

The trouble spot, if no CTD: you said " targeting raiders", well this time coc and click on the raiders in question, on the top of the screen, you will get its' ID: then type "GBO" and get that number too. with this information you can trace which mod or mods are effecting that piece of data.

I hope this helps you, I can't do this much on a file upload thread, it's pushing it a bit.

I'd say RAM usage is the most common cause. Oblivion doesn't play well with other programs, and sometimes try to use memory that's been allocated to something else, resulting in a CTD. Closing all other programs helps a great deal as does increasing the available RAM on your computer. There's also a free program called Game Booster that temporarily stops unneeded services and some have reported that it helped a lot.

Despite the spammy ads, this site gives an exhaustive list of ways to reduce crashes. :)

Thank you both for your help and insight into the Oblivion system! I was getting random crashes, not repeatable crashes. And VRAM and RAM was not causing crashes.

My problem was fixed with two steps:

1. Looking at my .ini file, the following lines were not correct

bUseThreadedAI=1 was set to 0, it should have been 1.

iNumHWThreads=2 was missing.

This could have been the result of reverting the .ini from an older backup, or else generating a new .ini file. Fixed both Oblivon.ini and Oblivion_Default.ini this time. Equally important...

2. Oblivion Stutter Remover sr_Oblivion_Stutter_Remover.ini

bReplaceHeap was set to 0. It should have been set to 1. Fixed it.

After these changes, my Oblivion became stable again. But it is a mystery how those settings were not what they should have been.
