Unwanted Customer Service ???

Every time I enter most any shop or the rare inn, the merchant/publican runs to meet me at the door immediately upon entering.

I don't know if they are just SO happy to see me, or if they sense the ridiculous amount of gold in my pockets, or what ???

I have reinstalled Oblivion with the fewest mods that I enjoy most, and the latest patch (or it was at the time of my re-install).

I have also completely restarted a new game/character since that happened (originally I was a Mystic Elf, now a Wood Elf)

The only thing I Think the two games/characters had in common would be that they had nearly half a million in gold on them.

There were very few, if any quests done by one of the characters, so I highly doubt that it is a quest glitch ??? Any Ideas ???

Mods...

Oblivion.esm (ofcourse)

Shivering Isles (currently disabled)

No Persistent Enchantment Glow Fix (Must Have)

Chase Camera Mod (Must Have)

MIS New Sounds (considering disabling)

MIS New Sounds Optional (considering disabling-SI doesn't like it)

Rens Beauty Pack Full (considering disabling)

Thieves Tool Belt (looks great over the DB armor ^~)

Louder Nirnroots (which I have also added my mesh tweaks to)

(I may make a fresh mod for just my tweaks and disable the Louder Nirnroots)

Not in 'Data File' Mod List, but in use...

OMOD-Texians Window Lighting System (Love)

BT Mod (Must Have)

Elven Cartographers (Must Have)

Black Female Underwear (I use this in lieu of a bod mod, to reduce the amount of 'mods' I am using)

Also.....

I have made use of...

OBMM (Must Have)

Oblivion Content Validator

Animation Fixer (Must Have)

IF you know of any conflicts or glitches in my combination I would MUCH appreciate knowing of it/them...

OBMM lists no conflicts between these, save one (a mildly irritating one).

(having SI installed, enabled or disabled, while using MIS New Sounds causes one crate type to appear as a yellow pyramid exclamation mark throughout the land. I appreciate the bird-sounds more than I mind the neon, so I keep it on)

IF there is a way for me to enter CS and make a fix for the MIS New Sounds Neon I would also like to know. Thankyou.

That's strange. Wait... are you saying it doesn't happen on your new characters, only on the old one?

If that's the case, then it must be a bug or something. Have you tried installing the very latest patch for oblivion? Also, I would recommend installing the 'Unofficial Oblivion Patch'. Now that is truly a MUST have mod. Other than that, I've never experienced anything like it.

Thankyou for your suggestion of the cause and possible solution for my issue.

I hadn't realized that my infamy had finally surpassed my fame by my last save

However, This issue started before my infamy exceeded my fame.

As of the start of this issue in two separate characters, my stats were as follows...

Character: Karma, Wood Elf, lvl 48, fame-49/infamy-28 playtime-350 hrs-ish

Character: Skatha, Mystic Elf, lvl 20, fame-0/infamy-0 playtime 100 hrs-ish

Also...The only quests in Skatha's journal at the time were...

Tutorial (completed)

Deliver the Amulet (Not completed)

A Door in Niben Bay (Not completed)

Buy a House in the Imperial City (completed)

Go Fish (completed)

Whereas Karma had completed most stand alone side-quests

She had Delivered the Amulet, but postponed Finding the Heir

And she had finished all Arena and Dark Brotherhood Quests.

EDIT: I have since completed the Theives Guild quests, and

am moving onto the Fighters Guild and Mage Guild quests...

SO my fame ought to exceed my infamy after 'Guild-ing'

(I will post, on the off-chance, IF this proves to ammend)

You can see why I doubt it is a quest/fame/infamy issue.

However, because I wanted to verify the common ground of this issue with each character,

I went and dug out my old/archived saves and found that they had both recently completed

buying a house in the Imperial City. I still think that an unlikely trigger for this sort of issue.

Who knows? I certainly don't... or I wouldn't be here asking for and thankfully receiving help.

In a sense Yes... I am saying that it doesn't happen on a character recently made/started...

But that it does happen in characters (or in the two characters) I have played most extensively.

The last patch I have installed went in with the Shivering Isles. I was told that by installing the

Shivering Isles expansion that my game would automatically be receiveing the latest patch...

IF however there has been a patch since the release of Shivering Isles, I have not installed it.

AND IF SO... would you be so kind as to point me towards a download of the newest patch???

I have been wondering about the 'Unofficial Oblivion Patch' and very nearly downloaded it lastnight.

I am/have been wary of using something my 'playmates' have not used or recommended---however

I am also willing to try new things out if I am convinced that there is more to gain by doing so.

I will take you at your word and give that a try... with fingers crossed that it is/will be compatible.

(The whole idea of compatibilities and incompatibilities confounds this techno-nouveau gamer.)

I will continue to playtest any and all suggestions I am graciously given by this FANtastic community.

ThankyoU!

P.S.

I found the Oblivion Patch v 1.2.0416 ... However, the subtext to the patch reads as follows...

"Please Note: You do not need to install this patch if you have already Installed the Shivering Isles expansion."

Do I still need a patch to be up to date? Or to install OBSE ? Or to possibly fix my merchant mayhem?

Hmm, I can't see that note for that patch (Link). Besides, if the patch is already installed, then the installer will just tell you that. No harm should be done. EDIT: Oh wait, I'm looking at the one for Shivering Isles. But anyway, if you plan on installing Shivering Isles, then get the above patches in the link.

About the Unofficial Patch and Conflicts... I always install the Unofficial Oblivion and then the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch first before any other mod when I'm making a clean/new install of Oblivion. I consider them 'Base' files since they fix so many things.

Do you mean OBSE or OBMM? If it was due to some mod requiring OBSE, I doubt that there would be a new character/old character difference in when the bug occurs. But I guess it's worth a try. Link: OBSE

With OBMM (Oblivion Mod Manager), you can convert all of your mods (prior to installation) into 'OMODs'. I'm sure you came across those before... Using that utility you could easily uninstall the unofficial patches should they not be to your liking (or if it doesn't solve your problem). All it would take is a double click. It also contains a handy 'ArchiveInvalidation' tool, that could possibly sort your neon container issue out, but I'm not exactly sure. Link: OBMM.

Thankyou again for your suggestions which I fully intend to play-test ASAP.

I may be overwhelmed untill next week, but I will let you know what worked...

Especially if it will help another at a later date. Anyway... Thanks Ever so Much!

By the way, I have OBMM (Luv iT) but not OBSE

(which someone said I needed, but not why so?)

Sadly, archive invalidation didn't de-neon-ify me.

You would only need OBSE if one of your mods requires it. Eg. Deadly Reflex requires it.

Reading through the posts again... have you tried loading your save with no mods active at all? Because if it stops occuring with no mods active, then you can figure the culprit out by a method of elimination... which may end up being tedious if you have a huge amount of mods. :/

Deselecting the mods via OBMM may not be the best idea for this though. In this case you could just go to Data Files in the Oblivion splash screen and deselect all of them manually by hitting 'reset to default'. Note down though which ESPs are currently active and which are not, to not give you a headache when reselecting them via the splash screen after the testing.

But if you've been converting all your mods to OMODs, then only the ESPs which are currently in use should appear in this list, since unused ESPs are obviously removed if uninstalled via OBMM. Making the reactivation of ESPs more of a rhythmic tick the box exercise.

So, as per your suggestions...

I have not yet bothered with OBSE, since you say I do not require it yet...

I did deselect the mods thru the 'Data Files' page, and a reset to default...

I have tried it with no mods active at all; no change in merchant behavior >.<

I have not converted any MODs into OMODs. The only OMOD I use currently

is Texian's Window Lighting System. (It originally came in the 'OMOD' form).

After being convinced that my MODs/MOD configuration was not the problem,

Nor was there anything in my inventory(with one possibility, yet to be tested)

contributing to my merchant magnetism, I decided to enlist a friend's computer.

(We have no hardware in common-I think, and almost no software in common.

I am now also convinced that it has nothing to do with my computer/game setup.

My save game behaved exactly the same on his computer. *UtterlY StumpeD*

We will continue to fiddle on this spoof... Thanks for your troubleshooting tips!
