CTD on trying to enter Whiterun

I have 3 games running concurrently in Skyrim. On my latest game ( a level 13 Nord warrior) I try to fast travel to Whiterun and get a CTD. OK so I load a level 27 game Redguard and try to fast travel him to Witerun - same result. So I go back to my level 13 guy and exit my location (near Riverwood) and walk/run him to Whiterun's gates and then try to enter - guess what? CTD. Same with a level 41 dude about to enter Windhelm who gets a fast travel instruction to Whiterrun. Now fast travelling to another location works so I then go back to my level 13 guy and fast travel him to Dragonsreach (Whiterun Jarl's palace - all ok. ??? What has happened to Whiterun main entrance??? Just taken anothwer Steam update. Before that everything was fine.

Anyone got any ideas? thanks

Wow and I thought I had too many mods xD

Ok generally if your game did not used to CTD and it does now it is almost certainly conflincting mods. Now It is difficult to tell which mod doesn't like which mod but you should try not to have two mods enabled that affect the same thing (with exception of textures -that just messes with visuals and not game behavior)

Simply deactivating all the mods may or may not help you so my advice is going to sound painful:

Remove all the mods -Like, really remove them, put them on a different folder so the mod manager can't find them

Uninstall the game and reinstall again.

Start adding mods again but this time keep it on the visual side. Add any eyecandy stuff you like (bodies, faces, eyes, hair, weapons and armor add-ons)

Start from a clean unmodded save... If you don't wanna go through helgen keep you can download a new clean savegame from pretty much anywhere.

TEST TEST TEST... Run around the countryside, fast travel in and out of Whiterun or any other CTD zones you know of.

If you've got the free time keep adding mods and testing until you find what conflicts.

If you don't want to go into all that fuss then try to avoid most mods that add scripts or require SKSE, overhauls, animations and stuff that affect the behavior of monsters and NPCs

Same problem happened to me, like A LOT, until I made a clean install and did tons of tests. Turned out SkyUI without SKSE was a bad idea, better sorting with carry weight x10 was a bad idea, faster horses with patch 1.06 was a bad idea and so on. I know you don't use these mods except for skyui but you get the idea. BE CAREFUL of what you install. Hope I helped, cheers!

Thanks for that So Many Mods. As you say the remedy you recommend is pretty drastic stuff. Before going that route I would like to explore one or two more basic processes of elimination first. The thing that puzzles me is that Whiterun hold is a place where I am in and out of as regularly as a fiddler's elbow during an Irish Jig and before the latest Steam update I had no problems

I don't think it's the update, I recently got dawnguard with the latest patch and the game runs smoother than ever -On Ultra settings.

I say go with the drastic stuff and get it over with because, when I had the same problems as you, I tried the processes of elimination thing but the game was so messed up that even when I disabled ALL my mods, it was CTDing the living $*!+ out of me.

ESPECIALLY in and around Whiterun... There's something about Whiterun I guess :P

Thanks again. Looks as though I have no choice. However as I had loaded a number of new mods I did run the Skyrim Optimizer, which although not listed as a mod, runs from windows and has been known to cause problems on occasions. I'm just checking that out after which I shall do what you suggest

As a further test I started a new game and got the same problem

Oh bother! (or words to that effect!)

If you want to be slightly less drastic, see if deactivating anything you recently installed works. And by "Steam update", what exactly do you mean? Updating Steam itself? Skyrim patch? Updating mods? If the last, do you remember which mods it actually updated? That would be a big clue.

(And I have to say, just because it bugs me to see it so low, move USKP up to right above the ESMs >> It's probably not terribly important in this case, but it's kinda sloppy. And who knows, maybe it is. )

Good points and thank you. Sometimes when I have run Steam updates I end up re downloading the whole of my Half Life Game suite. Also I have now disabled the Steam Cloud synch option as it inevitably (well used to back in the day) couldn't synch and drove me nuts by prompting me with error messages, but generally I am rather wary of Steam on principal as it has caused me problems in the past with other games when it has run (a) its own updates, game updates and some downloads. I understand that it is a convenient buffer zone for many game producers and provides some useful functionality for them. Skyrim is more than many other games really buggy so it is I think more difficult to pin down operating difficulties for gamers like me

Anyway I may have ID'd my particular thorn in my gameplay side. The Skyrim mod optimiser can, on odd occasions cause CTDs when you run the optimiser for NIF files so I am initially carrying out the following recommended process

1. Rename meshes and textures folders

2. Test

3. Disable 3-5 mods

4. Test

5. Repeat 3-4 until no CTD

6. Enable last 3-5 disabled mods one-by-one

I have already run the disable latest (or contentious) mod test (via Nexus sited donloads via NMM) so I know none of those individually are causing the problem. If the above doesn't work out then it's WIPEOUT time as has been previously suggested

Steam updates and Steam issues can and will contribute to game problems. I have recently reinstalled Steam and Skyrim after a rig rebuild, and this coincided with some very strange goings on at the Steam servers, as well as a Steam client update, which corrupted the Skyrim files to the extent that I couldn't save the game. Had to delete the Skyrim files and reacquire.

Apart from that, you seem to have one or two cosmetic mods that may be shouting at each other a bit. Whilst it is not such a crash on load issue with Skyrim as it was with Oblivion, I wonder if they are part of your problem?
