Site Bot
Article link: Compression Ratios Guide From looking at the types of compression used for files on this site, I decided to post a quick compression guide grabbed from http://www.kikizas.net/en/apps.7z.html Basically I'm asking all modders to use the best compression ratio for what they are doing, thus alleviating bandwidth and server space, this is a free service we are using, so those of us who don't donate should at least try to keep our uploads small and clean. <QUOTE>20 WORD FILES------------- 65.768.448 bytes (62,7 MBs) 00:02 copy time in minutes and seconds---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Frm Level* Prog* Time Speed* Bytes MBs Ratio* Base*---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7z* Fast 7-Zip 00:16 n/a 16.490.386 15,7 0,251 1,60---------------------------------------------------------------------------- rar Fast WinRAR 00:20 n/a 13.770.366 13,1 0,209 1,34 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- zip* Nrml Zip 00:31 n/a 16.262.500 15,5 0,247 1,58---------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROGRAM FILES-------------185 directories1.699 directories and subdirectories20.392 files1.156.573.239 bytes (1,08 GBs) (1.103,0 MBs)04:10 copy time in minutes and seconds----------------------------------------------------------------------------Frm Level* Prog* Time Speed* Bytes MBs Ratio* Base*----------------------------------------------------------------------------7z* Fast 7-Zip 07:17 0,572 501.807.419 478,6 0,434 1,30----------------------------------------------------------------------------rar Fast WinRAR 07:35 0,594 511.109.667 487,4 0,442 1,32----------------------------------------------------------------------------zip* Fast Zip 08:58 0,465 540.226.985 515,2 0,467 1,40----------------------------------------------------------------------------</QUOTE> So basically you should use 7-zip most often, as it can unzip both rar, zip, and 7z files and has the highest compression ratio on average. Did I mention that 7-zip is free and WinRAR is not? WinRAR -> http://www.rarlab.com/7-zip -> http://www.7-zip.org/
LHammonds
Kinda says the same thing as the File Compression Basics article but without relevant examples using files typically found in mods (NIF & DDS). ;) Thanks,LHammonds

LHammonds
Yes, there are quite a few tutorials on the CS Wiki and the TESNexus Article database that are directly transferable to FO3 but I haven't the time to copy/paste/edit them yet (been sick). There are utilities and files on TESNexus that will also work for FO3 and I have started to make "placeholders" for them that basically link them to the TESNexus pages when appropriate since we don't need multiple file uploads and it is easier to make updates in one place.
