Khet
Alrighty, so I've been also thinking about learning how to make my own meshes for my mods, however what would be everyone's personal recommendation? Getting my hands on 3D Studio won't be a problem as my brother owns it and I had messed around with it before but just got completely overwhelmed (mostly due to my ignorance) but I've heard Blender works too. So, I assume BOTH programs are powerful enough but what one would be the easiest to make armor/weapons in? (I don't mean LEARNING how to do it. I don't care how difficult to learning is, but in the end the simplest method always pleases me the most)
DavidWhitefang
I never have tried 3DS, But as I have learned Blender, I don't feel that it is lacking anything that I need! Once you learn to navigate it, it is a powerful and easy to use tool, that produces excellent results. Importing and exporting nif files is a snap also. I don't think I would switch, even if I received a free version of 3DS.
ihateregisteringeverywhere
I'm working in 3d's max, what can I say. I don't think I would switch, even if I received a free version of Blender. No wait, blender is free. Aww shucks.
LoginToDownload
I've got 3Ds max, but don't really feel like learning it... Seems incredibly different than Blender. Blender was really hard to learn, and I still don't know how to animate, but it works perfectly and efficiently for everything I've tried with it now. ihateregisteringeverywhere
I guess it's all about prefferences. Tell you what, I'll try blender if you try max, how does that sound?
LoginToDownload
My next model, then. Should be interesting. :) Happy learning curve.

LHammonds
personal recommendation?Blender, because it is free, powerful, updated / improved regularly and can get the job done. Oh, and there are a bunch of tutorials for it including those specific to Oblivion modding. LHammonds
amycus
Meh, since I'm using 3ds max, so that's obviously the one I am going to root for. True, most tutorials for oblivion moding use blender, but they usually work for 3ds max as well... at least so far as I have gotten :P (currently working on my first own armor) But if you choose to use 3ds max I recommend this tutorial: http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/j...rc/joanmenu.asp(you can skip the part of creating your own character though, since you will be using the body from the oblivion meshes). Should help you to learn how to actually do the meshes part at the very least.
Khet
Well, I don't know if it means a whole lot but I actually decided to try them both out today. 3DS I did nothing more than run around, bang my head on the wall, cuss a few times and close the program. As for blender it seemed easy enough for me to make my own sword, well, I DID steal the crossguard from another sword ingame but I was rather happy with the blade though my texturing is horrible. Something else I gotta learn... texturing from scratch. Oddly enough I can't find any tutorials on it! (Heh, texturing is a LOT different from Photomanipulation sadly....)
