I wonder what for?

I wrote this ballad for an assignment in my English class. It's due tomorrow, so tell me what you guys think. Criticism is definitely welcome. :)

“Oh king your gracious, oh lord so fair,

Look upon me and the letter I bear;

Upon it reads: ‘A surprise is in store’;

I wonder my king—I wonder what for?”

“Please my good japer, surely you jest,

Now begone with this letter and give it a rest!”

“No really my king, I come from yonder ashore,

Bearing a letter—I wonder what for?”

“A fool bears a letter—could this be a joke?

My temper’s not one you should dare to evoke!”

“Mercy my king, please, I implore,

I bear you a letter—I wonder what for?”

“Then where is this letter, if it exists,

Show it to me if you really insist.”

“The letter is oral, but a surprise is in store,

I wonder my king—I wonder what for?”

“But I must admit, to be most sincere,

That I, my king, am not what I appear—

To be, you see, as I’ve said before,

So here’s my letter—I wonder what for?”

“You see, my lord, any act is a con-se-quence,

And you have provoked a most wrathful prince!

He’s called upon me to knock on your door,

Now tell me my king, what could it be for?”

“The devil curse you, demon for hire,

May your soul writhe in Oblivion’s fire!”

“Not before you, for you can’t ignore,

That your days are numbered—I wonder what for?”

“My son seeks my whole kingdom singed,

This will sate his bloody revenge.”

“He said you’d drown in the blood of war,

I suppose, my king, he’ll show you what for!”

“Yet, you've shown yourself—how will you win,

Knowing now that you've exposed your sin?”

“Simple you fool, is it a secret thus more,

That in your hand lies the surprise in store?”

“You drink from a cup, tainting your breath,

And soon will you learn you've just tasted death!

This entire time, the wine you adored—

Will kill you my king—I wonder what for?!”
