Weapon replacer tutorial

Can someone provide a tutorial or a link to one that informs me and others on how to completely and utterly replace weapons entirely? I want to make a mod that simply replaces the Plasma Pistol with the Defender which includes the weapon's mods. (Scopes and what-not.) From what I've heard, its mostly simple for any script kid. So the tutorial shouldn't be that lengthy.

Just go in and point the weapon meshes at whatever you want it to use. You might need to change animations and the like, but you can get them from the weapon whose mesh you're using.

 

For that kind of work, I find it's actually much faster to use FNVEdit, because you can simply copy and paste the mesh paths instead of having to navigate to them in a folder structure every, single, time. However, if you prefer the graphical prompts and interface afforded by the GECK, then by all means use it.

That sounds well and good. But the GECK won't let me change the DPS info. Is it not necessary? Is there a way to get around it? Can FNVedit do it?
