CTD when selecting female

I have SKSE, skyui, unofficial patch, engine fix (both mod manager [1] and manaul portion [2])

 

have racemenu, and apachiskyhair v16 full optimized

UNP, and the pretty animations suite

 

the game breaks every time I try to select female, not just takes a long time (used to that), but crashes. No issues reported in vortex, loot, etc or known incompatibilities. Really frustrating.

I'm almost certain this is because your game is running out of RAM before it can finish loading all the Apachii hairs. Try this:

1. start out normally with Nord male
2. switch to Khajiit male
3. switch to Khajiit female
4. switch to whatever race you want
5. get back to me

I totally forgot - I have imperious, the race mod. Does that break females?

I would try these steps next:

1. use LOOT to order your mods (click here for the nexus page)
2. enable virtual memory if you have less than or equal to 8 gigs of RAM (2 gigs of virtual memory is probably good enough for Skyrim)
3. (presuming the game is crashing in Helgen) choose the default male Nord as a test character
4. escape the dragon, and go inside the Helgen fort, until after your hands are untied
5. open the console by pushing the "~" key
6. type in "showracemenu" (without quotes) in the console. This will open up the menu that allows you to change your character
7. then follow the previous steps outlining the Khajiit trick and see if it still crashes

The beginning of the vanilla game is intensive on memory, so trying to make your character in the vanilla fashion is pretty much impossible for people with hair mods, which themselves are memory intensive. So if it doesn't crash when you try these steps, there is a mod that will allow you to make your character before going to Helgen, so you can play the game proper. It's called Alternate Start - Live Another Life, and although it may sound misleading, it will let you start in the cart ride to Helgen, just like the vanilla game, but you get to make your character first. Alternatively, you can go ahead and get that mod and then try the Khajiit trick before going to Helgen at all.

 

If your game is still crashing after that, the only thing left to do is to selectively disable any suspicious mods one at a time. Certainly try to disable Imperious, but Apachii Hairs is far more likely the culprit. It's only temporary, but you can narrow down the problem area.

Hi if it helps i always had the same problem , i installed a mod called - Avoid the wait when changing to female - works for me , only you always start as woman :ermm:

Did it crash in a different place, or when you selected a female character again?

 

One potential problem I see in your load order is Helgen Reborn needs to be unchecked until after a certain point in the game, according the mod maker: "If you are starting a new character it is imperative that you leave Helgen Reborn UNCHECKED until you exit the cave with Hadvar/Ralof. Make a NEW hard save right there and load my plugin. It's fine if it is installed, just uncheck it in your plugin list until you exit the cave." I'm not sure how that works in conjunction with Alternate Start, whether or not you need to always do that, I'm not sure.

 

Also, just because you changed to KS Hairdos doesn't mean you should stop doing the Khajiit trick, in fact it's even more necessary because KS Hairdos is about 3 times as many hairs as Apachii. I'm not sure if manni44's suggested mod can help stop that problem where the precache tries to load all the hairs into memory at once (and unless you have 16+ gigs of RAM you're probably going to crash.) I myself simply cannot go directly to a human female at the start of the game, I have to do the Khajiit trick, but it's only once per playthrough, after that if you use the console or a mod to open the race menu, there is no precache crash. I actually have both KS Hairdos and Apachii installed at all times.
