Low FPS on High End Computer

I can play Crysis 2, BF3, Arma 2, all at 60+ fps, but when I got skyrim today my fps drops to ~20, in the open world. I don't know what the problem is, I even left it at the default detected settings.

System Specs:

Intel i5 3570k

OC'd @ 4GHz 1.1659v Core temps: Core 0 38C 12% Load; Core 1 38C 20% load; Core 2 46C 77% load; Core 3 39C 9% load

XFX Double D Radeon HD 7950 Black Edition

GPU Clock @ 1020MHz; Memory Clock @ 1575MHz; 70 degress Celsius

8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM

AsRock Extreme4 Mobo

Samsung 830 128gb SSD

The only possible thing I can think of from the info posted is that you have a driver issue - what Catalyst version are you running on there?

Other obvious place to look would be mods but I'm assuming (as you state you only got Skyrim today) that you aren't running anything except perhaps the official DLC?

I'm running Skyrim at fairly high levels at 30 to 60 fps depending on environment and my rig is far from up to date (Phenom II 940BE @ 3GHz, 8GB DDR2 and a GeForce GTX 460 with 768MB)

My mods are all official DLC only (Dawnguard and hi-res textures)

hoping to upgrade my system in the next few months :)

I have Catalyst 12.9 and I got Dawnguard and Hearthfire DLC packs.

Try setting your graphics one step lower in the launcher, then go in advanced and turn up anything not to do with distance. I play on High Distance settings with Ultra shaders/fx settings and grab a nice constant 60 fps. Try not to use force to enable AA (in GFX control panel, settings should be set to "application decides"), use 4x AA at most...there is little to no visual difference from 4x to 8x. Find a happy setting around 50 fps before adding mods, adjust LOD fades first. Try not to over tune for quality right away, See what looks good in game first. Good luck.

Yeah this worked, thanks a lot! I just set AA to 4x and it works perfectly, running at 65 fps atm. One question, since I had Dawnguard and Hearthfire installed on the initial startup of the game how do I activate them in game? I have them both selected on the data options menu of the skyrim launcher.
