Steam Gifting Gone Wrong

Recommended Posts

I'm sharing a post I'm going to vomit onto the steam forums later. What do you guys think of this? Am I in the wrong? Is this a common issue? Have you had bad experiences with steam?

Basically steam refunded me, but basically said "We do not refund software, here is your one-time forgiveness..."

Really steam? Really? So here is my story. I was feeling generous and wanted to send my friend a gift in honor of him building his first pc and getting steam (leaving xbox behind like I did…) and so I bought him Saints Row the Third when it was on sale for $14 (great sale btw). So once I gift it to him, he accepts it, and finds himself unable to find it on his games list. Whenever he tries to launch the game it takes him to the store page. The store page does not say he owns it like mine does. After attempting to reinstall steam and follow other troubleshooting steps from steam support we find we have invested too much time in a $14 game and were unable to find a solution. After talking to steam support they have agreed to refund me this one and only time, yet I find this ridiculous, I’m not asking for a refund for the sake of asking for one, I believe I’m entitled to it. The product was never delivered in a usable state to my friend, and they could check if they want to, he has zero hours on it, and I’d gladly have let them remote in to see/verify it doesn’t show up at all.

I understand steam support normally issues a one-time forgiveness refund and I’m upset that this is how mine gets wasted… on something that isn’t even my fault or my friends. Not to mention wasting our time trying to troubleshoot an issue that we shouldn’t even have had to. On a side note, if I had to guess what caused the issue, here is my opinion. The same weekend I bought/gifted/friend-redeemed the game, steam was offering the game as free-to-play over the weekend. This caused some kind of confusion that messed the game up for him. I’ve gifted him other games, and never had this issue.

So yeah… I got my refund, and I’m semi-happy I guess, but I’m simply annoyed with how I get issued any kind of warning or “forgiveness” for something that I was never in the wrong for. I hope neither of you had to deal with crap like this, it was a huge was of time over $14, but money is money…

Most likely the reason.

Never had an issue gifting games on it...but yeah. The response they gave you is kinda lame. IMO, it was an error on their part, not yours.
