Optimising for slow computers

Hi there,

I have a laptop (and buying another pc is not an option due to lack of funds)

with nvidia go 7400(for which nvidia says hp has the most recent drivers for,

and hp obviously couldn't care less to update laptop drivers, so driver

upgrade is out too).

Fallout 3 is really sluggy for me, way worse than oblivion full of mods.

I've tried tweaking around some things in the Fallout_default.ini, reduced

everything to minimum(or the minimum I think it is) and the gain from

my tweaking is nearly nonexistant.

So my question is, could anyone hint on possible places to tweak or

anything else to make the game snappier? I could play the game at

graphics level of just about duke nukem 2 if it would play at a decent

framerate.

Also a weird thing is that for example in the town of megaton it's very

snappy. But in Moira's(sp?) shack, a place which is a magnitude smaller

the game slugs down the the point of about 3-4 fps. Is that caused by

complex shaders/lightsources or some such?

Not really important whines:

<whine>Worst of the bunch is the vats where I can see the orange lines

around the character literally drawn(A few times for some weird reason, and

in a slightly(a few pixel) different positions  ),

and real time close combat is nearly impossible because the target

moves too much, so I have to resort to cheap methods of ripping a

shotgun shell in the face(waiting a few seconds for vats to get a grip

on itself) of those who get too close.

Would be nice if beth developed for pc platform and then

dumbed down the engine for consoles rather than add mouse

support for pcs after development leaving the pip boy a retarded

version of one from fallout2 and ui layout generally stunted.

PPS It would be really nice if beth focused on the quests,

storyline and game content rather than ridiculous amount of blood

splats, lightsources everywhere and fancy shaders version gazillion

and two  </whine>

Hi,

I also have the same goals in mind. Im running and older HP desktop. Miraculously, the game installed and i can even play it! But it is quite laggy. Is there any way I can boost the performance short of buying a new PC? Also, I have considered purchasing some additional RAM, would that have much of an effect on game performance?

Current Specs:

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ / 2.4 GHz

2gigs of RAM

Nvidia GEforce 6150 LE

Thanks
