mirrorburn
Hi Im new to Morrowind and have a question that I cant work out myself. *Please note that im playing on xBox at the mo, my PC version is on route* My character is a theif called Mirrorburn. Im obsessed with making money so I go about the lands stealing and selling what I steal in order to buy better training or equipment for myself. Im also an amateur Alchemist and like to dabble in a little magic here and there too. Ive worked out how to improve my Alchemy ratings. Im mixing ingredients and making potions and eating everything I find to see what it does ect. Ive seen my Alchemy level rise pretty fast. However, as a theif, one thing I want to learn how to do is Sneak around undetected. Problem is, I dont know how. Ive gone to pubs and houses and stuff and tried to get around undetected. As a lockpicker i've managed to gain entry into backdoors. Ive found myself upstairs whilst the owner is downstairs, so ive stolen things and run off through the upstairs door without them ever seeing me. However, my sneak level will not increase. it stays at 0/100. Ive gone into pubs and waited till the owner has his back to me, ive then moved around the pub and stolen a few things. but it never works. the guy shouts out THEIF! but does nothing and I just walk off. So, my question is.....how do you better your Sneak rating? Any advice will be appreciated. I just cant work it out. Remember im playing it on xBox not PC, although ive just order the PC version. thanks
Orius
you could try the master trainer in gnar mok i think, hes in a hut near the back of the town dressed in a robe. hes a kajit(sp) he can put your sneak up. other than that i cant help, im not to sure how to raise the sneak level any other way. ive played morrowind since it was released but im still unsure about raising sneak... ..now aint that a kick in the groin

mcstreet
wel just hold in the left anolog button and wait for the sneak sign to appear this means that you are undetected in someway but you have to be lucky as well for example if you are close to an npc with a low rating then they are likely to see you.so steal from far away till you get a better skill level, quite a few thiefs train you in that area too(cant remeber specificaly who).or just sneak around with the button held down for a while,as long as they cant see you the icon will apear and your level will go up about 1pt every 1 or 2 secs. Malchik
You can train at low levels easily in Balmora. Ask at House Hlaalu and the Thieves' Guild. Later there are two master trainers. One Orius has mentioned, the other is also a Khajiit. You'll find him in Shenk's shovel in Caldera. When you get the PC version the sneak icon comes up if you press - aargh I've forgotten! It's either control or shift - someone remind me! It is the same thing you do when picking pockets.
mcstreet
malchik its the ctrl key. also a bit of a spoiler as you mostly all have done already,if you hold the sneak button and stand near someone for a very long time your skill will go up quite a long way...i think its 6 hours(as ive heard)to max your skill. mirrorburn
you guys are brilliant! wonderful. I knew nothing of this left analogue control to sneak. I thougth there must be a dedicated button for it or something. Thanks. I'll be giving that a go tonight. So, to pickpocket youd need to approach someone from behind (ooer) whilst holding the sneak button and then what? press the A button as if you would if you were to speak to them? i really want to learn how to pickpocket and steal. I cant wait to play tonight now. ta for you help everyone!
batesmotel34
Depending on your Illusion skills or enchanted items you have, using Invisibility (especially) and Chameleon with a high enough level, you should see a significant increase in the percentage of the time that you sneak successfully with a low sneak ability, and hence the faster your sneak skill should rise. My current character is a night blade and when starting out I made extensive use of an Invisibility for 15 seconds (or so) spell both to increase my Illusion skill and to give me chances to sneak successfully with my initially feeble sneak skill. (It may still be most useful spell.) This seemed to work very well for the type of sneaking where you're just trying to get by someone unseen. It doesn't help much with pickpockeeting or stealing something that is otherwise in plain sight. For that you need a decent level of Chameleon to help you out. (The amulet of shadows works wonders. The ring of surroundings also does pretty well.)
Dagger of Symachus
Ok, to pickpocket have to have a good security and sneak skill. The sneak skill lets you get to someone undetected (thus allowing you to pickpocket without getting caught). The security skill is needed so that you can see the most of a characters unequiped inventory and makes you have a higher chance of remaining undetected while you steal. And you can also use Chameleon spells (to see a significant increase with a fairly low sneak skill, try to get a 50% or higher spell for about 15 seconds). Invisibility is also fairly useful, but only when traveling through the wilderness as when you do anything (ex:open door, attack, etc.) then the invisiblity while wear off. So when going through the wilderness it is cheaper and easier to cast so it is useful then, but chameleon doesn't wear off. With a good chameleon spell, and a good level in those skills (like 40-50 should be good) but it depends on who your gonna steal from (if your trying to steal from someone with a 7 in security then it is gonna be really easy, but if you trying to steal from an experienced theif with a 80 in security, then it might get a bit challening). batesmotel34
As far as I know, security only affects your chance to disarm traps and pick locks. I think stealth is the only PC skill involved when you're sneaking or when you're pickpocketing. Invisibility can be useful inside buildings too if what you're doing is trying to get past a guard or similar, or just sneaking around to use and therefore raise your stealth ability. Invisibility is easier/cheaper to cast than substantial levels of chameleon are. My night blade character has found a 100% chameleon spell for 5 seconds very useful for stealing items. Doesn't seem to work well for pickpocketing but using hte spell plus "sneaking" seemed to go undetected virtually all the time even when I was just starting out.
