nookatensis
I'm new to skyrim, mods, and vortex, so my questions are pretty noobish. I was adding numerous mods and things seemed great... and then they went to hell. So i disabled everything and purged and now I'm trying to enable/deploy one at a time. My biggest problem right now is that often deploying (or purging) takes a long time - as in hours. I've found references to people complaining about it taking minutes...so my question is: how long should I expect deployment to take? As an example, I'm trying to deploy the Unofficial Skyrim SE Patch. It's been deploying for hours. Is that right or is something else mixed up? For reference, my skyrimse.exe is in my D along with the Vortex mod folder. I've added SKSE64 manually and confirmed it (when skyrim runs). Some deployments have only taken seconds, but when they take hours it makes troubleshooting very difficult. When it takes forever, the notification reads "Checking for external changes." Not sure what other info is necessary, but maybe my problem will be obvious to someone. Thanks in advance! anjenthedog
Presuming you've installed one new mod, deployment should take a couple of minutes if it has to open the FNIS tool (Not sure why but Vortex seems to struggle with finding it or something...idk but it can take quite a while for FNIS for users to finally open) , and if it doesn't have to open it, it usually takes a little less time, perhaps a minute or so less. (don't ask me why it has to literally open it sometimes and sometimes not...) Here, I'm not accounting for any download times involved, which can vary from person to person, and of course, on the literal size of the mod in question. PS> there (might be some modification of the times involved depending on one's computer. A marginal 5-10 year old computer probably isn't going to process things as fast as an SOA system. (as I found when I first attempted to play Skryim on my circa 2012 laptop. Technically up to the challenge but it made it all but unplayable... erm... no, it made it unplayable.) I've got a couple of mods installed and enabled at this point. At this point I'm not even downloading anything, just testing enable/deploy. Deployment still takes 15 min - multi-hour. When deployment actually finishes, my next problem arises, which is that the game doesn't fully load - it's missing the initial right-hand menu. There is just a spinning circle. I'm trying to figure out if that's linked to a specific mod, but every test takes so long. Arg!

anjenthedog
FTR, 15 minutes seems incredibly excessive and anything longer is simply absurd.. In fact, I'd say that unless you're counting download time from a slow internet connection, (yes, I realize you said just enable/disabling them), anything more than about 5 minutes (start to finish) would be excessive and imo/ime, it's still a very lengthy install I don't believe I've encountered yet (perhaps the Bruma build, although I don't quite remember how long that took...) hmm... or those few mods that require a lot of dependency mods be installed prior or have complex configuration menus where you find yourself scratching your head on which things to choose. In fact, in my experience, most take about the same amount of time it takes to read this entire post... ~1-2 minutes, from the time I click the link to the time I can restart Skyrim. And when installed from my local drive, quicker. FTR, I have a heavily FNIS dependent install and over 240 mods enabled (load today is 255). FNIS dependency is where I spend most of my "wait time" when installing new mods or disabling/enabling them (something I do routinely with certain mods for environment), ie, waiting for FNIS to sort out its stuff. Thanks, Augusta - i see your point. I was thinking of this as a skyrim technical issue, but it's likely something to do with my computer and vortex. Yeah, something is definitely up with the way my computer is interacting with vortex. FNIS updates definitely slow things down. And I need to reboot my computer or the skyrim menu disappears. nookatensis
Just in case anyone has a similar problem and finds this in a search ... the apparent conflict was caused by Malwarebytes. Specifically, when the ransomware protection was running all of the problems described above happened, but when switched off they promptly disappeared. So, obscure and likely very uncommon, but there it is.
