What will happen to Skyrim when Fallout 4 comes out ?

Skyrim modding will definitely be decimated when Fallout 4 comes out, but by then the modding database will be so well fleshed out that it won't matter much anyway. Most of the important bugs and questionable design choices will be fixed (if they aren't already), and there'll be more fantastic quest, companion, immersion and player home mods than you'll know what to do with.

There'll still be many mods being made for Skyrim though, I'm sure. They'll dwindle to a crawl once Elder Scrolls 6 comes out though.

Having said that, you should definitely try Fallout 4. It will be FANTASTIC. Each to their own, of course, but I struggle to see how you can love one but hate the other. The games are so similar - the main difference is the setting. The freedom, the questing, the mechanics, the style of storytelling, it's all very similar. The Fallout games are a little more tongue-in-cheek, while the Elder Scrolls are a bit more serious...but also a bit more corny.

Actually, I thought Fallout 3 was beautiful. I guess I have some peculiar tastes.

You aren't the only one. It was one of the most beautiful games I've ever played (after a liberal dose of mods of course). Trekking through that lonely, hazy, yellow-green world is still one of my fondest and most atmospheric gaming memories.

what usually happens is that people move on.. personally I dislike the fallout games.. but TESVI would be huge news to me. The modding scene will not disappear.. what seams to happen is that the mods stabilize.. the popular mods get collected and refined to the final patched version of the game.. a fan patch usually gets made to fix remaining bugs and then the really ambitious teams will work away on there TCs until like 4 years form now some amazing mods will come out. So yeah people move no.. new stuff is always cool.. but i mean people are still modding doom2...

from what I can tell so far, a lot of really great modders are still in Oblivion (the game  ), nothing against the current modders in Skyrim, but Skyrim is missing some realy great quests, and I know some great ones are for a fact still playing and modding for Oblivion. and far more are still modding Morrowind.

For the most part, there aren't many group quest mods yet, there is one that I know of comming soon, but not to Nexus (it will be on his site).

When the really good quests start comming we will see a lot more interesting things in Skyrim.

I could go into a rant about how the reason we lack as many quest mods is Papyrus, but either way, I agree with you totally. I also don't blame it on the modders, but I hate just being given an item. Even a little quest makes it seem more "legit," I guess you could say. And quest mods are just fun in general.

But on Fallout 4, well, I'll probably move to it for a good while then play both on and off. The modding community will go down, some migrating to F4 while others will just disappear into the sunset eventually regardless of F4's release. But there will also still be good stuff coming out I figure. Especially since more tools will be available, and those that we have now will be improved. And being that the game will be complete with DLC and updates, mod stability and compatibility will only increase. Not to mention we still have hope for engine updates that'll give us even more room to mod, like verlet surfaces being implemented in a more accessible way.
