Training with Vilkas Bug

Hi. For some odd reason , for the companion initiation quest, training with vilkas, which involves your character having to train with vilkas in the courtyard, I encountered this bug.

Vilkas keeps repeatedly saying "what is the meaning of this? we do not use magic in here" followed by repeatedly unsheathing and resheathing his weapon.

I do not have any enchantments or use any magic on me. I also do not believe I was equipped with magical gear, I'm pure warrior with no magic.

Is there any way to fix this? Its quite frustrating for a pure warrior to be unable to join the warrior's guild in this game???

When asking for help, it is useful to post a list of what mods you are using. In this case, you are likely using a mod that adds a hidden spell to the player that touches surrounding NPCs. A number of popular mods do this. The problem is that when in combat, nearby NPCs interpret being touched by the player's spell as a magic attack. You could try adding the Brawl Bugs Patch mod which is designed to fix this. Edited by DreamKingMods

I have the same issue.

I suggest you take advantage of it, keep hitting him untill he says "not bad", on one character I have raised my weapon skill 5 points "training" with Vilkas.

The other companions will continue to say "That was a good one" etc. Vilkas will continue to have his massive auto heal, you will get no bounty. it is a win win situation.

Besides, Vilkas is taking you outside for training, correct? so why not train :teehee:

But that's exploiting a glitch. :armscrossed: I mean sure, if you wanna cheat yourself, but I'd feel kinda slimy doing it.

(DreamKingMods already said what I would have said, so I'm just replying to this bit.)

Yeah I kinda stopped when I got a raise in my 1h skill but I play a hardcore version of the game by adding a lot of mods designed to make the game challenging so I thought its kind of exploitative to do that but I guess you make a good point. I'd try your method, keep whacking non stop?

And since I use skill grinding cap so at most I will just gain 1 skill point that's not too bad >.> But I think i'd try the brawling patch Dream mentioned.

@Dream: I didn't mention the mods I use because there's over 70 mods I use, I'm sure you wouldnt' want to read all 70

Is it exploiting a glitch? when it first started happening, I hit him once and nothing happened, so i waited. After about 10 minutes I talked to him and he said go ahead and hit me, so I hit him again, then waited.

this went on for the next 30 minutes with me waiting, click on Vilkas and he says "go ahead take a swing".

Eventually he says "not bad" but untill that he will always say "take a swing".

the next character I took I just started swinging full power hits over and over, 3 minutes later he said, "not bad". it seems to be tied to how many times you hit him, so do i really have a choice?

Also when you have hit him enough the game forces you out of combat, so I say hit him untill you are forced out of combat.

Just so you know it didn't happen after I downloaded a mod, actually i haden't downloaded any mods in a couple of months and it started, and it happens on every character, but doesn't break anything, so to me it is not a big deal

on a few of my character he said "i'm impressed". usually after a flurry of hits dropped his health to zero.

  • 1 year later...

I have all the DLC and a few mods installed, including the Unofficial Skyrim Patch, and I just installed the BrawlBug Patch but Vilkas will eternally just get beat down and then get back up to fight me again. Any help is appreciated.

I found using console command Tai and an unenchanted weapon on him and then using Tai again I was able to move past this
