I don't get this

I'm confused. By the looks of these pre-release shots (about a year ago), the visual quality of fallout 3 was reduced before release. Now I don't know if this is a disk size issue (DVD) or if they thought it was too powerful for consoles to handle (What?). These also appear to be ingame shots, I'm fairly sure they aren't pre-rendered:

Is it just me, or does that ghoul look way better than the real game?

This environment shot looks better as well

I can't help but think this Super Mutant shot also is of higher quality

Thoughts?

Not sure about the super mutant image but the pre-ghoul screenshot definitely looks better than how they are currently.

They probably prettified and polished these images to build the hype up for Fallout 3. At least that's my guess anyhow.

I don't know if such is the case here, but some companies reduce visual quality slightly during optimization. To ensure their game performs at a rock steady FPS, tweaks are made to the visuals and rendering, so that even lots of fast moving enemies close up on screen don't lag the hell out of everything. If I were to guess, I'd say that is what happened here. Sacrifice made for those who can't afford the $2000+ computers.

Actually it kinda already does look like that if you turned every setting all the way up to the top. And use HDR lighting, not bloom.

Oh and to the previous poster, my computer only cost me $480 to build, and it's better than any pc i've ever seen in some newspaper or magazine.

Of course the console versions are not as good looking. They got about an 8th of the resources that the pc version requires. Consoles aren't very heavy weight at all. They're just a good common platform that is more targetable then 100's of different makes and models of various hardware on the computer. You can write code thats more efficient on them.

PC versions look alot more polished then early screens.
