Freezing when approaching sanctuary, need troubleshooting tips

I've already checked the suspicious mods that have anything to do with the area so I won't bother listing the 200+ mods running and expecting you guys to guess randomly which one is causing it.

I know you don't want to do that, because that's what I'm trying to avoid.

I was hoping someone could tell me if there is a logging tool or some sort of diagnostic that I could use to see where exactly in loading the area I'm hanging up. Or maybe someone can help me narrow down which types of mods I should be looking for. It's exactly as the sanctuary cell starts to load while approaching or fast traveling. It only started after the most recent patch. Other settlements load fine and the only companions at Sanctuary are Preston and Codsworth, and a couple automatons. I have half a dozen other companions at the lighthouse along with an extensive buildout and it loads fine

I really don't want to go through the mod list one by one because if it is mod related, I think it's going to be a combination of more than one and thus next to impossible to pin down.

Thanks in advance for any advice. If nothing is forthcoming I'll list my mods and load order but you guys really shouldn't have to go through all of that.

Is there something specific about your Sanctuary, that isn't common in the other settlements. Like a mod added item, or npc. Like a change made by a mod that only affects sanctuary. Or a mod that affects a npc that you have in Sanct.

Or something that you have built there, using a mod, that you haven't added to your other settlements.

My first guess, is that you're using a mod that isn't compatible with the most recent version number of the game. Version 162 has a lot of incompatibilities with the older mods, and simply will not even acknowledge that some of them exist. 163 did not fix that issue.

My second guess, is that you may have UNINSTALLED a mod that affects the aforementioned, and the savegame still contains a record, or a script for whatever it is in sanct that isn't there now. This is pretty much the same theory as the first guess, but it was an intentional removal, not a game incompatibility.

It's also possible, that when the game updated, you may have gotten a bad download. Have you run the file verification tool in steam? IF you rolled back your version number from a previous backup from your computer, don't do that. Steam will update your game again. (Thats a warning if you went back to an older version number).

And lastly, if you did roll back, did you completely replace most of your game files, or just the game exe?

Edit- probably not relevant, but its worth mentioning. After the update, if you kept it, did you update your f4se to meet with the latest version, if you run f4se. Did you also update all the mods that depend on f4se?

You mentioned the last update. Do you have a problem with building? By the way, how do you build the Sanctuary? This may be a problem with the location loading - too many objects. Possibly something is missing from the files.

No problems with building that I've noticed. Sanctuary isn't built out at all, just some random objects for messing around and a bunch of turrets to keep it from getting attacked. It "Might" be at 15% or so capacity, but I have the lighthouse built out to about 6 times the cap using a mod, so it's not item quantity.

I can't remember exactly what I have at sanctuary but if memory serves it's mostly DLC stuff and there shouldn't be any mod objects. The automatons are different from what I use at KLH so I'll try remembering how they were built and see if I crash when I copy them. Hard to say I'll get it right though, it's been months since I messed around at Sanctuary. Just wanted to go back there to check on some stuff to do with Provisioners and now I hate it even more.

It's not F4SE related as far as I can tell. Most of my F4SE mods are global stuff like weather changes and such, and shouldn't be anything specific to Sanctuary.

I have narrowed it down to a power armor mod though. Things are getting weirder and weirder with power armor on that save. It's starting to disappear off of frames and if I try to use a station on the affected frames I CTD. All of my "Power armor station with lights" have disappeared from Kingsport Lighthouse. Some 60-70 of them. I can't remember which mod that came from so I'll have to dig.

Problem is that power armor mods make up about 75% of all of the mods I have. I really haven't narrowed it down by much.

Either of you heard of anybody who had similar problems and found the offending mods? If it has anything to do with power armor, power armor related objects or cosmetics just assume I have it. The only reason I still play the game is to collect PA.

Sadly most of those mods don't get updated anymore. I'll probably find at least a dozen broken by the time I'm done searching.

Heyas Baniktin! Sorry for not replying sooner. I just got back from vacation last night.

Ok, well at least we have a start. The first suspect on that, would be Creation Club content. If you can, change the skins on your PA's, then exit game, Move all the CC esl files out of your data folder, start the game, then manually create a clean save. Exit game, restart, and load form the clean save.

Now, before I go any further, I just wanna make sure.... is your game version updated? to 163?

If yes, then do this. Get Xedit https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/2737/ and install that. That will take a bit of time, and you'll have to click thru tons of tip boxes.

But afterwards, you will see that it starts out with all of your mods listed with check marks next to them. Go ahead and click ok, or open.

That will take some time.

After it finishes loading all the files for your mods, you will see them in vertical order, along the left panel. Click the + sign next to your first mod, then click on the file that says Header.

You will want to find the entry in the right side pane that says what version number the mod is written for. Older ones probably say 0.950000 You want to change that to 1.000000

Now after you change that one, highlight the 1.000000 with your mouse, right click it, and choose copy You can now paste that into the edit. That will help a lot, because in order to update all those mods..... you're going to have to repeat this with every single one of them.

Yeah, thanks Bethesda.

Make sure to do a save of your updated mods when you're done. You can do that by holding down the Ctrl key and tap the S key on your keyboard.

Hope that this helps out

[Edit] PS - After finishing updating your mods, if you've got another hard drive, or even a big USB stick, I recommend backing up your game folder, along with your game saves. If you ever have to reinstall, you don't want to have to go through updating all of these again ;)
