Crashing, but with good performance

Simple really, although the solution may be less so.

The game seems to crash randomly, although much more often in open-world cells (instead of houses and dungeons).

Specs:

CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 255

RAM: 4GB

GPU: XFX Radeon HD 6850

I have a RAM and CPU monitor on the LCD screen on my G15 keyboard.

 

Normal usage:

CPU: Between 0 and 10%

RAM: 30-40%

 

While playing Skyrim:

CPU: Around 90-95% (sometimes more)

RAM: Around 50-80%

 

I'm not able to monitor my GPU load but considering what it is, I imagine it has no problem running Skyrim on mid/high settings.

 

Could the problem be solved with my planned CPU upgrade (AMD Phenom II X4 965)

My savegame is about 25MB, which is rather large. Another potential problem. Quicksaving takes about 2 seconds on this save (with over 140 hours on it), and much less time on brand new ones.

 

For reference, I have a lot of mods (the only big one is Moonpath to Elsweyr) and among them are USKP and Possessive Corpses.

SkyBirds, Head Tracking, Immersive Patrols are among the most demanding. No texture mods, except for the aMidianborn stuff (in fact, almost all vanilla textures are from the TESV Reduced Texture Pack).

 

Basically I'm looking for a solution to the crashing besides potential CPU overload (as that might not be the only problem). Perhaps also a way of reducing the size of my save game - the save game scanner tells me that the Papyrus section of the save accounts for 15MB out of 25MB.

 

My framerate is very good. Again, I can't monitor it, but I would say at least 50 FPS.
