Is it Safe?

Sorry to dive in on an existing thread, but it seemed slightly relevant, i havn't been playing a lot of skyrim recently, and just booted it back up the other day to start a new character when i got wind of Dragonborn™, Anyway, long story short i updated all the mods with updates through NMM like i always do when i come back after a break, and now i'm getting CTD's with skyrim which i wasn't before.

My question is, should i put this down to the 1.8 skyrim update including the Steam format change which i did, or should i assume its one of the mods?

(To give a little more detail the 3 crashes i've experienced so far seem completly unrelated. the first two where while i was using TFC 1 console command to take a screenshot, the other was while trying to read a book, so no load doors, no heavy CPU/GPU use, if anything they happened during less stressfull moments than normal gameplay,)

Thanks in advance for any help i can get on the subject, much appreciated.

@Beccy - Might be an idea to check the mod pages of the various mods you have to see if other users have been reporting problems with patch 1.8.

If you do not already use it BOSS is highly recommended to get your mod load order sorted for optimal efficiency.

Tes5Edit can also be useful even if you just use it to cleanse the official patch and DLC.

When starting a new game it is highly advisable not to add any mods until you have been able to exit the tutorial dungeon. Many mods will cause problems if active through the tutorial.

Does anyone know how long the Steam's conversion to new format is supposed to take?

Steam says its checking my existing files but its been about an hour now and I don't know if its even running properly.

I'm all in for a long update but I would have liked to have known what it was before it started.

I see the memory ticking by but It hasn't done anything yet and I'm afreaid to touch it.

Does anyone else attach Steam operations to something akin to a fascist state where you, the peon, are only on a need to know basis?

It only took a few minutes for me and I've had no problem with it. Some on the Steam forums are saying that it is re-downloading the entire game.

Not sure why there's such a difference between users. Maybe make sure Steam isn't being blocked by your firewall?

Thanks Oakrain, but one of my "Must Have" mods is "live another life", which means thankfully, i don't have to do that dungeon over and over, and get to apply a little of my own RP to the story, (My current Vigilant of Stendarr would have a complicated reason for being caught with some stormcloaks :D) otherwise its sound advice, i'll do my best to follow. thanks.

I haven't noticed Steam updating the game as in changing the file format, but this may be because I have Skyrim Unplugged active. Or it may have done it while I was asleep, hehe.

As flummox says you do have to make sure Steam is not blocked by your firewall to make updates possible (if you want them...). I have AVG which is particularly antsy with games (especially Guild Wars 2), so when I had my rig rebuilt I had to spend a good bit of time reading up on which ports various games and the Steam programs use and setting up rules for them.

Is there a reason to update to 1.8? I'm perfectly happy running with 1.7. What is the actual benefit? Most of the discussion seems to revolve around whether or not the new patch does harm, and if there is a way to do it without messing up your game or having to start new characters. But what does one gain from the update? Anyone see an improvement in performance or stability? Or anything?

Not really seeing any benefit. I was having some CTD issues but I'm not sure if it was Hearthfire, the patch or both (been running 1.8 from beta hoping it would solve some Hearthfire issues). But, since cleaning the Update, Dawnguard and Hearthfires esms with TES5Edit the game has been very stable.

@ginny In my experience you won't see the new format update until you try to start the game with the vanilla launcher.
