Skolhamarr
I was very limited on time when I made my own post, but Ihoe you are right in semi logical way. Look at from this point, what city does the IC emulate some what Constantinople. Both were massively walled city, both are water logged so to speak Imperial seats of power. From the view of the besieger, can be nightmare. Each sector is wall, and urban warfare hell, then you have the wall around the palace. If I was to besiege IC Fire and sickness would be the way the take care of the imperial city, besiege them and wait not the most glory bound way to handle the matter. An effective one Burn them out, pitch and what not. Then the rotting flesh of enemies livestock or civilians. An it would not be outlandish to say with the aid alchemy, one could have crude gun powered cannon. Like those you might find at the siege of Constantinople by Ottoman empire 1453. In that simple "If" and go oh! and run for the hills Evacuate civilians not everything able body person that carry weapon should stay also they make great cannon fodder or in this case arrows fodder. Why waste a well trained warrior? Maybe retrospect evacuate women and children, if the siege goes badly for defender the aftermath will be far worse than the siege itself. http://lh5.ggpht.com/abramsv/SI17YChfLlI/AAAAAAAAXqI/J6O9xRS5O5M/s640/wetrdfgdfgdfsdf.jpgThe Great Turkish Bombard, which was also called the Dardanelles Gun, the Royal Gun, the Hungarian Cannon, Muhammed's Great Gun or the less common but more honest Good Lord, Look at the Size Of That Thing.Built in 1453 to defend Constantinople, they shocked their builders by unexpectedly doing what they were designed to do: lobbing a 1,500 pound granite sphere at whoever they were pointed at just~ What an image just busting apart the IC multiple entry points heavy soldier pouring into the breach. Weapons of war, mace, axe, and hammers made to crush plate, bone and what ever gets in your way. To counter this move pikes, spears halberd would rush into the breach to hold off the advancing force. Swordsman would be held off until the lines of pikes and halberd were wavering. Really you would pull the defense retreat to a better point and use the cannon fodder. Claim its there imperial duty to fight for their homes, true they might halt the advance not by much. It would give the defender, time to set up dependable line halberds and archers. Most likely not all the heavy troops will be in plate then archers will be effective if not hope IC have have crossbowmen. This would repeat thought out the city, then you would get to the imperial Palace on way or another. Last stand, this could an advantage for the defenders if the soldier know there is no way out they will fight harder and try to take say many with them as they can. A few attacks might cause them the attacker, then would get the archer or crossbowmen raining death on them. Even if they retreated into the Palace itself. It would be cruel fate, bombarded be it Trebuchet or crude cannon. I would hate to have that fate, so looking at it like that... The aftermath, of a siege, I have read there is a cruel art form to looting after a siege. You can not have soldier running about taking as they want. Almost all metals of value should be brought to point where it can be melted down shipped back to homeland. After that, soldiers are more or less let lose on city... If the commander is still alive at this point, he might regret not taking the lives of innocents Women and children there are far worse fate than just death. To defend the city would be to costly, it could not be defend if multiple breaches happen. If the enemy knew they were going against Imperial soldiers who are mostly in plate, they would chose weapons of war to defeat the plate. They would have more crossbowmen than archers...IC is the capital it would be one of last city that would be siege by this time Empire would smashed and a more than few city would have already fallen to this invasion turn into conquest force. Force and man power to do this would be in tens of thousands. You might have 10,000 soldier ready to lay waste to the IC.... My personal choice of attack would be Anvil, Kvatch, Skyrim, Bruma and then IC. Ones the IC falls the rest will fall in line. Spies in every city, assassin lurking about it would be troubling time.... I'm some what gleeful thinking about see the IC night fall aftermath of the siege The image with large gaping breaches in walls and the city giving off a hellish red glow as the city burns. White gold tower, still standing but the half has been bashed off by some large stone, the marks of war all over it dents, marks and cracks.all over it and the walls. This image reflecting into the bay, with moon and starlight...Order is shattered in a strange guttural tone that resounded along the walls of the houses, which seemed dead and deserted, while, behind the closed shutters, eyes watched the conquerors, who, by right of war, were now masters of the city and of the lives and fortunes of its people. In their darkened ruins the inhabitants have given way to the same feeling of panic which is aroused by natural cataclysms - those devastating upheavals of the Earth, against which wisdom and strength alike are of no avail. Though the same feeling is experienced wherever the established order of things is upset, when security ceases to exist, when all that was previously protected by the laws of man and nature is suddenly placed at the mercy of brutal, unreasoning force. the victorious army slaughtering all who resist, making prisoners of the rest, looting by right of the sword, and thanking their god to the sound of cannon. wow .... I am done
TotallyNotToastyFresh
The Imperial City would be a difficult thing to get into. The only points of entry that I can think of are these: The main bridge leading directly into the city, the sewers, the waterfront, and the small bridge between the prison and the rest of the city. First of all, before the battle begins, I would pollute the water around the city. It won't make for an incredible defence, but it would drop moral. I would cave in the small room containing the exit to the sewers, and the tunnel leading to them. Then I would need to find some way to block off the main bridge. A good way would to use all of the wooden garbage lying around the city and block it off, like suggested in an above post. Failing that, as a last resort, ie. go down fighting type strategy, I would have planted explosives in the bridge before the battle, and set them off by an invisible soldier whil most of the opposing force was standin underneath. I would not be so stupid as to destroy the whole thing, just a small portion of it, or one that is easy to rebuild. Another way to block the bridge would be to get all of the previously mentioned wooden stuff, put it all into one big pile, and set it alight. It should burn for a while, and keep the enemy force out for a while as well. I would put a squad of archers on the top of white gold tower, and have them fire on the enemy below. Also, with magic, a squad of invisible SpecOps would be set up across the bridge, positioned for ambushes. Not much else to say, apart from the massive force of imperial legion that I would position in various places around the city.
f00m0nch00
The Imperial City would be an extremely difficult city to defend. For one there's one land access and one waterway. An army could very easily block both. cutting the city off from supplies. There's no room anywhere on the walls for siege weapons or a decent number of archers. There are no towers with good firing angles on the bridge. There's no room within the city to field any decent number of soldiers and there are gates everwhere. There are also at least several sewer entrances that any smart adversary will have already infiltrated and a large enough trebuchet could easily rain rock on the city from the opposite shore. The walls don't even have arrow slits, murder oles or hoardings to speak of. In short, i would send everyone through the mage portal to Anvil. At least Castle Anvil has a moat. CrimsonKing1990
1. Set up patrols and forts along the shore of the island2. Burn down the wooden bridge to the north of the city3. Have extra soldiers at the waterfront4. block off the sewers5. Archers and mages on the wall6. Put soldiers with tower shields in phalanx formation on the main bridge7. Trebuchet behind the soldiers

Trebuchet behind the soldiers That's all good and everything, but what's your backup plan? What if the soldiers on the main bridge are overrun? What if they have engines of war and destroy your trebuchet? Or worse, the walls to the city? What if there are too many men for the defensive force to handle? To every plan, there must be a backup. And, to be safe, a second backup.
Boss171
not to be arrogant but tbh if anybody's attacking cyrodil best bet is they're looking for my character(in my game i mean) im lucky enough to have explosion arrows and a dwemer airship, so its fly out over the enemy, let rip with the cannons and my bow and theyre dead.id fly via drake to all other cities, and make em send reinforcements. theyd have to, without me cyrodil would be dead 10 times over.if not, as said cave the sewers in. im not evacing civies, they should fight to protectate their homes, why should women get off, they are just as hard as men. train evrybody, give aem all legion kit. have them line up on the walls, fire at the enmy, get the infantry to defend, ill fly out and attack with cavalry, ill still do the airship tactis with bows and cannons, get archers up there as well, and infantry. for the infantry, these would be the elites, the blades trianed by me in fact, and i would get the mages to replicate the dwemer parachutes, and attach weapons to em as well, and lead an aerial assualt aginst th foe. while theyre distracted, the reinforcements come up from behind and finsih em off

Not only that, but the reinforcements will be an army itself. Can you really get an entire army to successfully sneak behind another army and finish them off? The whole plan seems a bit...unrealistic for the scenario at hand.
