Settlers starting to ignore me

DrkSpde

Recommended Posts

My settlers have started ignoring me and their jobs. It started with just them abandoning defensive points shortly after I assigned them, but now I'm entering settlements to find everyone starving because no one is farming, but they'll sometimes latch on to other assignments if they're available and ignore my instructions to do anything else. I'm running Sim settlements and often have to reassign houses too. I tried turning off auto assignments, but it doesn't seem to have helped.

Are there any mods known for causing this? Solutions?

I've read about script problems on really large settlements, but this started happening before I even had 10 people and in previous saves I've had close to 30 settlers in one settlement with no issues.

Heyas Drkpde! one thing that you might try, is to DL and run this tool by SKK50. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/31625

It will help to diagnose different types of settlement issues.

If that doesn't help, you are probly gonna need to post your load order, so we can see if we can try to see any that might be a problem.

The easiest way to do that, is to look up your plugins.txt file.

"C:\Users\xxxAppData\Local\Fallout4\Plugins.txt" xxx being the username that you use to log into the computer.

You can open it with notepad.exe which comes standard in windows.

then press the CTRL key on your keyboard and tap the A key to select it all

then press the CTRL key and tap the C key to copy the highlighted text to your clipboard.

From there, you can paste the text into a forum post.

Odd. I know I replied to this, but I don't see the post.

Anyway, I just tried the recommended mod. Some neat stuff in there. It reports there's no errors though. Technically a good thing but still leaves me without a clue.

As for the load order, this is what I've got. I've let Vortex do its thing for the most part.

Well, I'm glad to see that the tool brought good news. At least now we know that it's not a problem with your workshops :)

But WOW!! That is a LONG list of mods!

Ummmm. Ok, so one thing I want to mention right off the bat, and for this, I apologize. I've never used sim settlements, so that part of it is really throwing me off.

Since I'm not familiar with what regular mods play ok with the sim settlements mods.

The fact that you've got so many different mods that affects companions and settlers kind of raises a flag, as it is definitely possible that some of those may not mix.

Before I try to dig too far into that hole tho, is there any settlement settler or companion mods that you've removed, before this started happening?

That's going to be tough. I took about a year off the game, but kept up with Nexus and installed mods that I knew I would want when I came back. I don't remember everything I had installed over that time. Spent most of a Sunday to get everything updated.

If companion mods might be the problem, I think I start with Companion Overhaul ( https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/26502? ) When I last played it wasn't working correctly, but I never got around to uninstalling it. Now it seems to be doing what it's supposed to so I wander if maybe there's some adverse side affects? No mentions I see from others having an issue with it, but it's proving to be a little over powered so I was planning on getting rid of it anyway. All the other mods marked as companions in Vortex are ones I've been using for as long as I can remember.

Interestingly, I just checked on the Heather Casdin mod that I noticed the other day I hadn't disabled. Vortex is showing me it's not even installed, but her bunker is clearly marked on my in game map right now and I did catch her in VATS once. Not the first mod I've noticed active in game that Vortex said wasn't.

Ok, so here we also have another bit of really important information. When you started playing again, did your game update thru steam?

And if so, is your updated version 162 or 163? Not that it really matters, because both versions broke a bunch of mods.

Also, when you started playing again, did you update vortex?

For the most part, I don't think that it's companion mods, since most settlers run off of different scripts than companions. I only really mentioned it, because some companion altering mods go above and beyond and affect settlements as well.

I'm gonna wait to hear back from you, because if this is a game version issue, it really changes things.

Steam is set to always update my games. Details on the EXE say file version 1.10.163.0 I update vortex every time it asks. Running the latest F4SE as well.

Is there a way to get vortex to confirm what I have active and what I don't? Having found at least 2 mods so far that are clearly active when vortex says I haven't even installed them, I'm starting to wonder if I might have an older version of a mod(or more) running at the same time as a new version and I'm just not seeing it.

Hey again

I'll address vortex first. I don't use it. I know that some people have been having some problems with it, and this game. Even before the new updates from bethesda, and the problems that they're having with the servers here on the nexus, I just didn't like the interface.

I prefer to do everything manually.

Which actually works out, because it's really easy for me to tell you how to check to see what mods are listed as active in your game.

You're going to want to check out a file called plugins.txt

you can find it on your hard drive here -

C:\Users\yourloginnameAppData\Local\Fallout4\Plugins.txt

that will tell you all the esp/esm/esl mods that you have installed, and if they are active. But it won't tell you about mods like looksmenu or bodyslide that have .dll files that work from your data folder. Only the esm/esl/esp files. The ones listed with an asterisk before the name are the ones that are active.

Normally, I would say that if the mod file had the same names like miscfilename.esp and miscfilename.esp windows would overwrite or keep the version, depending on what you choose when it prompts you to overwrite or not. But with Vortex I dunno. It might keep them in separate folders. I would only recommend to go manually hunting through your votex files to find out.

Ok the first thing to do would be to open up all your mod files with a tool called xedit. http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/2737/

you'll need to download and install it for both of the things that I'm about to tell you.

The first thing is to use it to find and clean any mod conflicts in your esp/esm/esl files. Tutorial is here-

<-- Youtube video

The next thing you're going to want to do, and this, is probly gonna take you a while, if you're using a lot of mods, is to update any of the old headers in your mods.

What this does, is change the older mods to be compatible with the new version of the game. Due to the header changes that were made in vers 162.

Before doing this, make backup copies of the esp/esm/esl files that you are going to edit, just in case!!

After installing Xedit (also I apologize, I almost always typo this as "exit". So I'll apologize in advance if I do, and miss it!)
it will bring up a list of ALL your installed mods. Press the CTRL key and tap the A key on your keyboard to highlight the entire list. Uncheck ONE mod in the list, and since they are all highlighted it will uncheck all of them. Now, single click one of the mods in the list, to undo the highlight all. Now, put check marks next to the mods that we need to update. Then click Okay, or Load (can't remember what the button says, atm.)
That will take a minute or two.
Once it loads all the files for the mods, you will see them listed in the left hand panel. They will have a + sign beside their name. Click on the + to expand the list for that mod. You will then see a file that says HEADER. Click on that, and it will open in the right hand side panel.
You're going to want to look for the version number. If the mod hasn't been updated, it will most likely read something close to
0.950000
You will want to right click that version number, choose edit, and type in
1.000000
I recommend using copy and paste. Especially since you will be doing this at least a lot).
Also, a big popup is going to spring up, asking if you're sure that you want to make changes to the file. Don't freak out, that's just Xedit doing a double check, it's perfectly normal.
Once you have that mod edited, you will have to do the same thing with the next mod. Rinse and repeat until all three have been updated.
When you're finished updating the headers, press and hold your CTRL key, and tap the S key. That will have xedit save the changes to the files.

Wow, that's going to be a project. Going to have to wait until I have some more free time for that. Hopefully this weekend. I'll start with verifying that I only have installed what I want installed.

I'll report back with the results. In the mean time, thanks for all advice. You've gone above and beyond.

Heyas DrkSpde - no problem, trying to be helpful :)

Yeah, that whole thing with updating the headers can be daunting. And tedious, if you're doing it with a buuunch of mods. The good part of it tho, is that after the 3rd or 4th one, you're in the groove, so it only takes a second or two, or three, if you've got the numbers ready for copy and paste.

That, and the fact that xedit will load them ALL up at once is a big help in that situation as well ;)

I will go ahead and add tho, that if you're loading up a bunch of mods, like say.... 15 or more, or...a lot more.... go ahead and get that started, then get up and fix a sandwich, grab a cup of coffee, or whatever, it will take several minutes for it to load up all the files. ;)

Good luck :)
